Can old employers tell new potential employers lengthy details about you or do they normally just speak with the HR dept just to verify your employment with the company?? Of

Most verify dates worked, job title, and if eligible for rehire. Some companies' recruiters know each other and will call directly to get detailed information from the employee chart 'off record'.

Keep in mind that it is totally legal for former employers to give negative job references about you just as long as the information being exchanged is factual (for instance... Susie was chronically tardy during the last year of employment with our company. In fact, she was tardy 72 times between March 2012 and April 2013).
However, due to fear of litigation, many corporations have policies in place that allow HR to exchange only specific information such as dates worked and eligibility for rehire.

The no rehire is the only negative comment a potential employer needs to hear.
"You wouldn't want them? Me either"
According to the HR director of the company I was with I'm eligible for rehire. My last date of employment is 6-14-13. My hospital is a large hospital and they have an automated system that they send all current and past employee inquiries to and they told me all they give is your job title and dates of employment. Do you think they'll say I'm still employed if she inquires before my end date on June 14 or that the automated system will say (since they already know)my employment end is June 14? I'm just curious because if I'm offered the job she's going to ask do I need to give 2 weeks notice....!

Why not ask the HR department? Or better yet, just tell the other employer if you're hired that the 14th is your last day?
