OCC Nursing program

I am currently waiting for my acceptnce/rejectin letter so I don't know any new developments in the proram but since they have been talking about revamping the program requirements for at least a year I'm sure it will happen before you're ready to apply. Which is good! I only have 1 A-, the rest A's and amy worried I won't get in. So hopefully things will be easier for you. Of course, still try to get all A's and that will help. Good luck! :)

I am a pre-Nursing student at OCC taking all my pre-reqs. This is my first semester at OCC.

All the posts on this website are kinda freaking me out about the program, even though I am determined to get into it.

I am just wondering if anyone has been to any information sessions this year? If not, are you planning on going to one? I'm going to the one in March.. but since I can't wait that long I wanted to know if anyone knows what their new admission policies might possibly include? I hope it doesn't say "perfect 4.0 AND ---" but rather "It's okay to get an A- in a class as long as you ---"

I'm a 1st year student...if I had to guess, I would say they might add the HESI or a similar test to average with your GPA. Good Luck!!!!!

I didnt know there were going to be new admission criteria. I have not heard any rumors. It does make sense to some extent because the GPA keeps increasing every year to get into the program. Why are you so determined to go to OCC? Have you spent any time checking out BSN programs? I would get going on that because its going to take you 4-5 years to get your RN at OCC if you are starting pre-reqs from the bottom up.

I'm so upset. It's gonna snow like crazy, school will be closed, and the final pushed back and my mini vacation RUINED.

Thank goodness it was not cancelled! I got an A overall in Psych, and an A- in lab. Now I'm gonna sit back and enjoy my very short break, because med-surg is next. Lord, help me!

Congrats on your A. I just finished Med-Surg 2 at Southfield. We were all very concerned about the weather as well. Im glad they didnt close, it would have been so much more stressful waiting.

Prospective Students

Looks like instead of MPT, there is going to be a comprehension/math test that must have an overall 75% pass. There is a fee to take this test, and it can only be taken twice.

They cut down the GPA based classes, from 11 to 5 -- GPA is weighted on Comp 1&2 or equiv, Micro and A+P1&2

Retaking classes for a better grade will result in a lower score, and transferred classes may count against you also. I am not sure what the 'may' count against your score means exactly...possibly that in a tie situation a student whose done more pre-reqs at OCC takes precidence ...and I think that is currently part of the process.

The other classes are still required, but are not factored into GPA for admissions. C or better in those classes, similar to what is required now for chemistry.

OCC is just costing me less money that's why Also... I found out what their new policies are. Now they are only counting the composition 1 and 2 and the bios (micro, a&p1 and 2 and i think another bio class im not sure) in the GPA for nursing (so you get your As in that) and the rest of the 8 or so classes it doesnt matter what your grades are (but obviously it would be nice if you could ace them too) then they said they are implementing reading comprehension with the math test, you only get 2 tries, and you have to pay for it... and also you have to score more than 75%.

I think that was it. I got a paper from the counseling office and that's what it said..

Im surprised, that isnt exactly the change I would have expected. How is that going to narrow the applicants down? It sounds easier to get in, not harder. I wouldnt worry about the math and reading comprehension, how hard can it be after you have taken your required math classes (Algebra 1) and Comp I, II. I thought on the MPT you needed 90% or better?
