OB Rotation Q's...

I am a little nervous about OB rotation. It is definitely a foreign avenue for me. Can anybody tell me what to expect? What responsibilities will an lpn have on an OB floor? How invasive are the procedures we are expected to perform? And lastly, is it more difficult for a male to perform these duties (for lack of opportunities) due to the nature of the situations?

Any pointers are apprecieated as well.

On our floor, LPN's work with postpartum mothers and babies (not labor and delivery). Off the top of my head, this can include initial newborn baby care/resuscitation (although a student isn't going to be expected to resuscitate), watching/checking for bleeding, mom vitals, fundal checks, removing foleys, baby vitals, initial baby baths, getting mom up and around & cleaned up, infant feeding, getting mom eating and going to the bathroom again, helping to manage postpartum pain, lots of education on postpartum mother and baby care (diapering, cleaning, feeding, bathing, bulb syringe, resources for help after they go home (are they on WIC?, need more breastfeeding help?, etc.)

There were a couple of guys in my OB rotation in school who did not appear to have any problems as far as I know. Just be the professional that you are :)

It varies by hospital. The above post is excellent and covers it pretty well. Be sure you ask at your hospital and of your instructor how you can be of the most help and in the position to learn the most----this is your experience and you deserve the best! GOOD LUCK!

Your duties as an LPN on any floor will depend on what your hospital allows. usually, RN's have to do all the assessments (that's a legality). Your best bet is to speak with the manager of the floor you are joining.
