I know exactly what you mean. I felt so at home in L&D immediately in clinicals as well. I will graduate in May and have already been in contact with several nurse recruiters. I've basically been promised a job on post-partum after graduation. It really depends on the area of the country you live in, I think. I will be moving to California and they are hurting for nurses right now, so new grads kind of have their pick of areas at this time. Your area may be a little different, I don't know.

Another thing I've been told is that it is easier to get into Postpartum and then transition into labor and delivery than it is to get straight into L&D. Just something to keep in mind. Also, the willingness to work nights is a big plus. Good luck to you in your endeavors. Please keep us posted.

Where you live/work will influence if you can go straight into L&D. The hospital I work at hires new grads for L&D without a second thought if we have an opening. At many times in my career, I was the only one on our unit that had ever worked anything other than L&D.

You have current information (it is a very dynamic field) but know a very, very small amount of what is necessary in L&D. But do not let that stop you from trying.

The other problem is that most L&D nurses love what they do and stay almost forever (does not leave many openings in smaller hospitals)

I worked in L&D for 12 years in a charity hospital--it gets in your blood. It is a great area to work
