nursing

Hi, I'm currently working on a school presentation about my future educational and career goals. I plan to study nursing in the future, and I wanted to ask a few short questions about your experience if that's okay.

  1. What is the hardest part about nursing school or being a nurse?

  2. What skills are most important for nurses?

  3. How is AI affecting healthcare and nursing today?

  4. What advice would you give to future nursing students?

  5. Would you recommend nursing as a career and why?

It is wonderful to see you planning ahead and gathering real world perspectives before you even step foot into your first prerequisite course. Choosing nursing is a commitment to lifelong learning and a unique blend of scientific knowledge and human compassion.

The Reality of the Nursing Journey

The hardest part of nursing school is the transition from memorizing facts to applying clinical judgment. In most subjects, you study a fact and repeat it. In nursing, you must take three different facts about a patient and decide which one will kill them first. As a working nurse, the challenge shifts to the emotional weight of caring for people on their worst days while managing a heavy workload. You have to develop a thick skin while keeping a soft heart.

Regarding technology, AI is currently being used to predict patient deterioration through algorithm-based warning systems and to streamline documentation. While it helps us identify risks faster, it can never replace the therapeutic touch or the intuition of a nurse standing at the bedside. We use it as a tool, not a replacement for our own assessment skills.

Success Strategies for Future Students

  • Master the "Why": Never just memorize a lab value. Learn why that value is high and what it does to the heart or kidneys.
  • Prioritize Communication: You can be the smartest person in the room, but if you cannot communicate with a grieving family or a busy surgeon, patient safety will suffer.
  • Protect Your Mental Health: Burnout is real. Start practicing self-care habits now so they are second nature when school gets intense.
  • Time Management: Nursing school is a full-time job. Treat your study blocks like non-negotiable shifts.

I absolutely recommend nursing as a career. It offers incredible diversity in roles, from the flight deck of a trauma helicopter to the quiet of a research lab. You will have the privilege of being there for the beginning of life, the end of life, and everything in between. It is a career that will challenge you every single day but will also provide a sense of purpose that is hard to find elsewhere.

What specific area of nursing are you currently most interested in pursuing for your career goals?
