Ob/Gyn - Internship?

Published

Hi there

Heading into my Junior year of nursing school. I am ready to get into a hospital and become familiar, but I can't become a CNA (you need 2 semesters of clinicals in order to not have to take the CNA course if you're a nursing student in Massachusetts)

I would love to be able to see inside the maternity ward and see how the in's & out's work prior to clinicals (We do maternity senior year) and I'm not sure how to do it. No places in my area allow for internships/externships. Any other advice for getting experience? I don't know any nurses I could shadow.

If I could I would sit in a hospital hallway & just watch & learn- I am fascinated at how much I don't know yet. But they tend to frown on that type of thing! ;)

Specializes in Acute Rehab, Neuro/Trauma, Dialysis.

Are there any midwives in your area that would allow you to intern with them? It is not the same as a hospital but if they were willing you would at least get to see the holistic side to natural home births and pre/post-natal care.

This, or even a doula, if nothing else. Either could be helpful as long as the patients are cool with it. A doula has a very different scope of practice (non-medical), but you'd be there, at least, and you'd be able to observe what the nurses are doing.

Where are you in mass? Just curious because I'm in central mass and all the hospitals around here, including the Worcester level one trauma center, require completion of only one clinical rotation to qualify for positions.

In fact of you don't mind a drive to Worcester from wherever you are, I believe the umass memorial campus maternity ward is hiring PCA's 3-11p. At least they were a few weeks ago, not sure if the positions have been filled yet.

Fantastic idea! how should I go about finding a midwife? Haha- I feel silly with how much I don't know!

Hey there! I am on the South Shore, but I go to school at Anna Maria College in Worcester.
