NY LPN Program?

Published

Hi. I am considering LPN school. I would like to hear from people who have gone to NYC LPN schools. Can you please tell me which school you attended/are attending and the pros and cons? Thank you.

I went to Northern Westchester BOCES in Yorktown Heights. They also have a Southern Wetschester BOCES in Valhalla just about 30 min north of NYC. They are both great programs. They prepare you very well for any clinical situations. I also heard of a new LPN Program at Monroe College.

In New York City, there is Bronx Community College, VEEB (located in Long Island), Medgar Evers Community College and LaGuardia Community College (where I attended and graduated last year). The disadvantages I find in the community colleges is that they do not have many seats, and they are just as competitive as the RN programs; meaning that you have to acquire a very high GPA in order to enter. VEEB is a vocational school, and I see that they have a high percentile that passes NCLEX, but I hear they are really tough. I hear that they have an entry exam, and an essay, and if you pass, you are accepted. The major disadvantage to a vocational school would be that the student has not earned college credits to transfer into an RN program, therefore, you would have to take English, Psychology, Anatomy, Microbiology and all of those other wonderfully stressful courses.

Actually, ALL nursing programs, may it be LPN or RN are tough. There are fewer LPN schools around the metropolitan area than there were in the past, so, to get into one can be a challenge, I'd assume, because there are so few seats, and they take the highest grades, making the competition very stiff. I have seen lists of schools upstate. What you can do is check the website for the New York State Boards of Nursing and get a complete list of all of the practical nursing programs in the state of New York. But, with anything else, if you are determined enough, you can do whatever your heart desires. Stay focused and best wishes to you!

NYC Department of Education LPN Program, sites are in Northern Manhattan and Brooklyn. Call 212-666-2116 ext. 6 for more info. I think they are still accepting applications for Fall 2007. As for BCC, I am in their RN program now. From what I hear, their LPN program is highly competitive. If you have had college experience, NYC Board of Ed's LPN Program should be a breeze to get into. Good luck.

Thanks for all of your responses.
