Nursing School Waitlist

Published

Good evening everyone!

I am currently a part time pre-nursing student at a community college in Central New York. I was advised that despite the fact that I am carrying a 4.0, my admission to the RN program is not guaranteed. They explained that academics are not the only factor that is considered for the nursing program (they also consider prior healthcare work experience). My adviser said that if I were to be accepted, it would take me about 5 years to obtain my AAS in nursing.

As you could imagine, I would like to be graduated, licensed, and working on my BSN in 5 years!

My question to you is if there are any options for me that may expedite my acceptance/graduation?

The last thing I want is to finish all of my general education requirements, and then be stuck out in left field with no program to go into.

Advice?

You sure he didn't say 5 semesters? If you do no prerequisites before gaining admission into an Associate's degree program it will take 5 semesters. I get the feeling this is what he was talking about. To be honest, take the "prerequisites" first. Even though it's not required to do them before gaining admission it will increase the odds of you finishing the school. I've seen Anatomy I and II wash out a lot of would be nurses. At the very least my recommendation is to do those before applying. Just my 2 cents.

I wish I could have done those two courses first but I couldn't. Chemistry is a prerequisite to A&P at my school. If you can get those out of the way along with Micro do it!! Good Luck!! :-)

Five semesters sounds about right to complete my prerequisites (2-2.5 years). The way that my college schedules their core nursing curriculum, it takes two years to finish the degree, hence the approximation of 5 years total.

I hope that makes sense.

I'm anxiously awaiting my acceptance letter for Nursing Fall 2012, and the wait is killing me! I'm in my second semester at a local community college and had a 4.0 GPA last semester and had hoped that would help me get in this fall...not so sure after reading some other users responses :( Like you, after I complete the summer semester, all my pre-requiste classes will be complete, I can't imagine having to wait around another year...I'm itching to get started lol! I decided to get a head start working in the medical field, which I currently have no experience, and will be taking CNA classes in a few months so I can at least get some experience in while I wait!

Good luck!

I'm waiting for my acceptance letter for fall 2012 too! Good luck!

My school is weird, they just take the top 100 scorers on the HESI A2.... no wait list, no GPA....

Seems like its the same issue everywhere. Kinda stinks to spent 4+ yrs on a Associates degree. Have you looked at all the nursing school options in your area?

Perhaps, take a CNA class and work as a CNA? My school is a petition process. It goes by those who live closest to the school (odd) and if you have to get a 100 on the NLN-RN.
