Nursing School Selection Process???

Soooo its taken me forever to pass the entrance test to nursing school. Most of you know that to be even considered for nursing school you have to pass a entrance test, so I did. The test is 3 parts: Reading/Writing and Math. You have to make a 80 on Reading/Writing....I made a 82. You have to make a 50 on Math...I made a 72. So you would think I did pretty good. Well I submitted the application which included an essay question. And I think that my essay was very good. Plus I've been a CNA for 4years so there goes experience. So I've been waiting on my acceptance or non-acceptance letter for about 2 months, so about a week ago I got my letter.....DENIED!!!! Due to "limited space" per what the letter said. I was so upset to the point of tears. So immediately I jumped into my car a sped to the school to speak personally to the coordinator of the program, to discuss with her the "selection process" and to see where I fell short. She explained to me that they had to cut down at least 7 students, 32 to 25 students because of clinical issues that occured that previous year. Anywho so I asked her how she chose those 25 students....she simply stated "test scores" She said that the 25 highest test scores were choosen, which led me to my next question. I asked her if the only thing they went by were scores then why had I stressed myself out with the extensive application. Why had I stressed myself over the essay. They claimed they read essays, took into consideration experience and volunteer work, passion, and heart for this field...But she simply stated "test scores". I mean most serial killers have excellent IQs. I thought the tests were supposed to make sure you are academically capable of entering the program, I proved that I was, but it still wasn't good enough. I really want to be a nurse. I bet most of the people that got accepted dont want to be nurses or even care about nursing....it just doesn't seem fair, but then again life isnt far. Does this seem right to you all or am I just being overdramatic.

Most people who apply to nursing school want to be a nurse for one reason or another, otherwise, what would be the point? Yes, a bit dramatic, but I understand how disappointed you must be.

I am sorry you are disappointed, but yes, you are being extremely dramatic. I hope you didn't go off like this to the individual at school that you spoke to or any future attempts are sure to be denied.

Your scores on the testing met the MINIMUM requirement. It is very likely others who tested scored higher than you. It is likely the essay is utilized as a measure for breaking ties on people who had the same scores.

I am sure it feels unfair now, but in fact it is extremely fair. Everyone takes the same exam. Those who prepare for it best and score the highest are judged as those most likely able to handle the considerable demands of nursing school. And I have found MOST people who go into nursing school have a passion for nursing. Not too many of us are serial killers either.

Take a deep breath, wash your face, pull up your big people panties and start on plan B.

I am hoping the OP didn't come off to the person they talked to at the nursing school as they did in their post.

If so, they might have shot their chances at that school in the future.

yes its fair.

Did you take the TEAS test? Was it Teas 4 or 5?

Did your school have a points system meaning you got a certain amount of points for each aspect of the application? One school Im applying to grants admission based on the number of points you accumulate ..which come from gpa, teas score, and your state of residence. Another school takes all the applicants and takes the top 76 gpa's..if there is a tie somewhere they use the TEAS score as a tie breaker.

Take the teas again and score higher, retake some of your pre reqs if you have a low gpa...try to reach a 3.5 or higher if you are not already there.

good luck

Don't give up. Our school is the same way, pretty much TEAS score only. You sound like you did really well, but since they only accept ~30 people, it sounds like you need a really competitive score. If you took the TEAS, on the score report it tells you what percentile you ranked in your program. Check that out, figure out how many applicants they have and how many they accept to figure out approximately what percentile you'll need to get in. Then just study, if it was the TEAS there is a really good book by ATI and what's in the book is what's on the test.

Also, I don't think you are being overdramatic, I'd probably react the same way, wanting to cry, then wanting to ask questions.

Yes they can just use your test scores. They may have not given you any credit or a small amount for your essay and experince, either way I don't think they will tell you otherwise since it is subjective with essays. Our program is completely objective. No essays or interviews. The people who score the highest gets in and they go down the list. They include Teas, documented employment in healthcare, residency, GPA, and A & P grades. It is very straight forward and avoids this type of issue. It also helps applicants get a better picture of where they stand. Sorry you didn't get in a good luck next time.

You are being overdramatic. Yes it is fair that they used test scores to determine acceptance. At the end of the day that is the fairest way to determine acceptance. In my program people were turned away who had 4.0's and scored in the 90's on the entrance exam. It is really competitive out there. The competiition for jobs is just as fierce.

You have no way of knowing what the motivation to enter nursing was for the accepted students. I agree with the previous poster who said cast a wider net and apply again.

People on this board are so unsympathetic. He said he almost cried, what is it that you gain from being so harsh to him? The nursing application process can be crushing. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.

I dont think telling someone to retake the teas and bump up their gpa is being mean...i guess we could just all agree that its unfair and the OP did all they could .....but how is that helping them get into nursing??? if the OP really wants to get in they will study harder for their test and reapply...of if they are lacking on their GPA they will retake some pre reqs...simple as that. Im not going to agree with someone just to make them happy.

No, that's definitely not mean, that's helpful advice, but the posts with "You are being overdramatic" and other statements that are clearly not helpful just seem unnecessary. I hate to see people get kicked when they are down.

Nursingstudent , you will make a wonderful nurse because you have such compassion. I thought I was the last of this dying breed. To the OP I don't think your being overly dramatic and I do agree that you should re-group tighten up those scores (since that's what they are now looking at) and "cast a wider net" when you apply next time. Your determination will pay off in the end , Best of Luck to you and those of us still waiting to hear.:nurse:

The OP specifically asked if he was being dramatic.
