NUrsing in Nevada

U.S.A. Nevada

I am considering relocating to Nevada. Can anyone give me information about what the nursing environment is like there? Does anyone have anything to say about the quality of life? Any preference for Northern or Southern Nevada?

Would really like to hear from someone who has moved from the East Coast to Nevada -- but will be delighted with any info at all.

Thanks!

Hi...I'm currently in an ADN program in northern Nevada and the only thing I can tell you is that the cost of living out here is ridiculous. But this is coming from someone who sold her beautiful 2000sq foot home in Texas for 90K and you can't find a decent house for under 180K here. And even those are in questionable neighborhoods. It's ridiculous. As soon as I have a little bit of experience, my husband and I are thinking of relocation to Oregon. They pay even better than here and the cost of living is MUCH lower. The only perks here are no state income tax and the proximity to Lake Tahoe (I'm a huge snowboarder). Even Vegas is cheaper than here....by quite a bit. The starting pay for nursing here ranges from $22-26/hour. Hope that helps!

Hi there...Vegas resident here! I'm also in a ADN program and I can tell you that for me, Vegas was much cheaper but I came from San Diego where you can't get a fixer up for under 300,000. The average cost of a house here is, for a starter home, no yard, 140-180,000 and to a homes that's around 1800sqft is about 200-250,000 with a yard. Lot's to do around here and then sometimes there nothing to do at all, serious lack of culture, but the cities still growing and it's getting better. Saw on the news that their estimating 3 mil ppl in Vegas in another 10 years!

Pay is, I think, anywhere from 24-27 but I could be wrong. There are also TONS of signing bonuses and if you come from out of state they are up to 8000. 3 new hospitals are in the process of opening so there's no shortage of jobs.

Any other questions feel free to ask!

Good grief! Really? I was expecting the cost of living to be way lower than the East Coast. Hmmmmmmmm. Back to the drawing board for me!

Thanks so much for your replies!

I am also moving to nevada this next summer, we will either be in reno or las vegas not sure which one.

Who is paying the biggest sign on out there in Vegas you mentioned 8000 wow thats great.

Id love to hear pros and cons We are going out in december and scouting out both communities.

climates are totaly different. it's like opposite ends of the earth!

I'm pretty sure I saw that sign on at UMC, but the other hospitals, Sunrise, Mt View, St Rose, Valley, Summerlin and there is a new one open, can't remember the name and another one opening next year. I would check out each one.

As far as pros and cons, Vegas is an interesting city...I love it and hate it. It's cheap to live, lots to do and then sometimes theres nothing to do (one can only go to the strip so many times) The public school systems not the best and the cities getting a little crowded (expecting 3 mil in another 10 years).

It gets hot here, mid of Oct and I got sunburnt (something like 91 out today) and the winter can get cold, but only the mountains around us get snow.

If you want to know anything, feel free to PM me!

Can anyone tell me about different areas of nevada? Family-friendly? Any suitable for growing a garden? Home-schooling? Raising a family? Pay and working conditions for nurses? How about LPNs in med-surg or LTC?

Any nice communities close enough to work in Vegas?

Gowing a garden can be hard in Vegas...there are a lot of new water restrictions and often times are landscaping (what little of it we have) dies in the summer. We have what's called Xeirscape...a water free desert landscape...I love it, it's pretty much no maintance and it's looks so nice.

I've said it before and I will say it again...I would NEVER raise kids in Vegas (and I am FAR from conservative). I just don't think it's a good place for that. We have one of the highest high school drop out rates and some of the lowest spending per child in schools, if you want to home school then that dosn't matter but I still wouldn't. I just don't think there is enough to do for kids out here.

I think this town is great if it's just the two of you and no kids, there is a lot to do. I do think this place is getting more violent but it is also a growing city. I know lot's of ppl who raise kids here and if it works for them then that's fine...I just wanted to give you my opinion.

As far as work....there's tons of it....not even a issue and won't be an issue anytime soon (3 hospitals are opening/expanding) Many ppl say working conditions are bad because there are so few nurses to fill the spots but that sounds like it can be an argument for any city. Pay is good compared to the cost of living and no state tax...however, the price of homes is going up FAST!

I would suggest a nice long visit out side of the strip...drive around, watch the news read the local papers...I think that's the only way you can get a good feel for the town!

What program are you in? I graduated from Truckee Meadows Community College in 1993... :)

Hey,

I moved to Vegas July of 03, from MA so if anyone has an questions email me at [email protected] or post here.Coming from MA the pay stinks out here and granted no state income tax but it doesn't make up for the pay cut. The medical care out here is horrible compared to the east coast, but I love the weather and yes the houses are moving up fast in price but you still get more for your buck on a house out here compared to the east.I think in general the cost of living averages about the same as back east.
