Nursing Insurance

I heard over and over that we need our own insurance but no one has ever gone into detail about where I get it or what I need. Any advice please. I start a new job soon and would like to be covered.

malpractice insurance can be purchased through CNA by going to the American Nurses Asso. website (www.nursingworld.org). I bought mine thru my homeowner's insurance company. Look in the yellow pages under malpractice insurance carriers (if in a big enough city). All the nursing journals have ads for companies too. I pay less than $100/year for 1 mill of coverage.

i was always told malpractice insurance for nurses is useless. my instructors said patient never go after the nurse - they go after the hospital and the doctor. i work with a lot of nurses, and none of them have personal insurance byound what the hospital has. just my opinion.

This is so not true especially not these days. I can see maybe why some instructors would think that, being that many haven't worked a proper nursing job in decades. They came from a less litigious era, where your hospital would back you. These days, the hospital will throw you to the wolves, I've seen it happen. Of course, the hospitals don't want you to have it, because you will be bringing in your own lawyer to protect you. And they do go after nurses, in my area(New England) there was a fall off of a surgical bed. The surgeon, the anesthesia provider AND the circulating nurse were all sued.

I get mine through NSO. It's $98 a year, which comes out to less than 10 bucks a month. They will also cover you and provide you with representation should you be called before the BON. You're covered in your private life should you render aid outside the hospital and you're covered if you work another job.

It's your license, protect it. Many of the old school types at my hospital don't have it...most of us younger ones do.

I just bought malpractice insurance thorugh NSO. It cost me $44 for $1 million of coverage.

You ever know when someone will decide to sue, even if you did nothing wrong. A bunch of nurses at a nursing home near me are being sued for negligence. The family signed an arbitration agreememt with the home when the relative was admitted, so they're suing the nurses.

I just got a quote from NSO for $250 a year? What am I doing wrong? I had another nurse tell me shes has hers from there and only pays $98 a year.
