Are there any masters prepared nurse Informatics Specialists here? I'm thinking about it and I know it's up and coming but I don't know what the current job prospects are for this specialty.

I finish my MSN in Dec. I have had 2 interviews already. HUGE field, anywhere from data analytics, EPIC education, data mining, lots of choices. I am looking at more of the end-user use (nurses/providers) than developing standards and coding

That's fantastic! May I ask if you're studies are online and where you are going to school? I am currently at WGU online in their RN to MSN program and just completed the BSN portion of the program, I'm in the Leadership/Management concentration but I can change to an Informatics concentration, which is new at WGU. Thanks

I am at Duke and it is all online (except 2 days per semester for 2 semesters). I already had my BSN. I did 2 semesters of general masters course work and now I am in the informatics only portion. 2 classes for summer and then fall is my capstone/practicum/project.

Hi there! I finished my MSN in Informatics from Walden University (all online) in Winter 2011. Once I was ready to finally transition away from bedside nursing, I had no problems getting interviews. I was more interested in looking for a IT related position and found a job as a systems analyst at a hospital in Hartford, CT. I've been working there for almost 5 years and am now a lead systems analyst. I work mainly on the Epic application and have 5 different Epic certifications. I started with Epic working on the Inpatient module as I had always worked as an inpatient nurse so I did a lot of physician order set build, workflow analysis, and nursing documentation design. I have transitioned into working in lab systems, cardiology systems--where I do not necessarily have clinical expertise but enjoy the challenge. I work on a team with a lot of nurses but some hold less technical positions than I do--their roles center around end-user education and physicians liaison work.

I have loved the change in lifestyle this brought me. I work 8-4pm M-F but do have to take on-call two days a month. I can work remote once a week. I live in CT where the salaries for systems analysts are very high in my opinion. I love working with nurses and physicians to really customize Epic to work for them and to give them the tools they need to document.

I'm glad to speak offline, over the phone. I have mentored a few other nurses who have chosen to pursue this career.
