Really, it takes time for you to recognize when the routine has become routine, and when it becomes a "good shift".

For me, if I can help 1 patient understand what's going on, comfort one mom or wife or husband, get my meds done on time, make sure all my patients are as comfortable as possible the entire night, I've "had fun."

Some nights are busy....some nights I have to be a nurse, a tech, a chaplain, and a sitter.

the moments I live for are when I catch something happening and fix it, or bring it to the doctors attention quickly enough that I may have saved a life. A post op patient had a heart rhythm change, and I KNEW something was wrong. VS were stable....pulse ox good....EKG was different....he was different than when I started....after hours of constant bagering the doc, I was finally rewarded with the test I wanted, and the result? he had a PE! I had the rush of knowing I may have saved him....I live for that....

that plus we have evening karaoke in the nursing station...just loud enough to get down and have a good time while still not bothering any patients.

let's get the record straight

not twisted!

it depends on your job!

nursing is fun for me

because i make it fun---

i smile, tell jokes and

present a smiling, upbeat demeanor---

it helps me feel better

and makes my patients and co-workers laugh!

now if you went into nursing

thinking you were going to have

disneyland fun---oops! :lol2:

we are trying to save lives, too

and makes folks feel better!

have fun and enjoy what you do:yeah:

Locolorenzo, that's my favorite part of nursing, too...:) knowing when something is not right, acting upon it, and helping to save a life. It does make it all worth while. I've had to send 3 patients to ICU since the beginning of my short lived nursing career thus far :nurse:, and it feels good to know that I am recognizing  when things are going downhill. My adrenline really gets to pumping. I just hope that I can continue to be observant of things for my patient's sakes.

:dncgbby:hahahahah.

The people I work with make my job fun. We all have the most ridiculous sick sense of humor and mostly spend all night talking about crazy stuff and telling jokes. Or my patients will be crazy (i work ICU) and it will be entertaining (but also really annoying) listening to them make bird noises and other sounds all night. The other night my patient kept complaining that he "had to get out of there" but couldn't walk so I put him in a wheelchair with a monitor and we took a stroll around the hospital. You have to find little things that can make your day better. And it will get better once you're more comfortable.
