I am beginning nursing school in the Fall at my local community college so I am just getting started. I have a question that might seem stupid but I am curious. I know that when you finish your RN training and get your license, you can also get other certifications such as critical care, etc. Exactly how do you go about getting those certifications? Is it a class you take like CPR or something or is it a lengthy training? I hate being in the dark about things and I like to plan ahead so.... thank you in advance for any info you can offer! :)

you need 2 - 3 years in a recognized nursing specialty.
check out the ancc (american nurses' credentialing center) website
for the list of nursing specialties that ana provides the exams.
bottotm line:
you have to be experienced
and pass a certification exam
before you can attain
certification in a nursing specialty.
other nursing specialty professional organizations
administer certification exams.

well its so many hours that you need for whatever cert. then you pay 350 bucks or so for the honor of taking an NCLEX style exam. You pass you get the letters behind your name.

Hello,
I just checked into this a few months ago. I know for med/surg I need something like 2-3 yrs (3000 hrs) and have to have 30 CE credits and then pass the big test. Good luck to you. I just returned to nursing, and had 16 yrs under my belt. Too bad I have to start over.
