Nurse practitioners?

Published

I am a Nurse Practitioner, double board certified in both internal medicine and psychiatric/ mental health.

I am curious about working in England for awhile but have no real knowledge of what that would take. Are there NP positions available in England?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Joe

there are NP jobs here in the UK but you will find they work a lot different that in the US. Generally work in the community. Karen sometimes post on here and she is a NP so may be able to tell you a bit more. You may find jobs advertised on here http://www.nursingtimes.net which will also give you an idea on how NP's work over here It is free to join

To work in the UK you will have no choice but to go through NMC and they recently changed things for foreign nurses not from an EU country and you now have to do a 20 day course which unfortunately has to be with a recognised university and there isn't enough places. http://www.nmc-uk.org/aSection.aspx?SectionID=17

Hope this helps :)

hi Joe

I'm a NP here... the role is a bit different to the states.. for more info take a look at the NPUK website http://www.nursepractitioner.org.uk there is an RCN document there outlining the role.

there are jobs here.. but we dont command the salaries of NP's in the states.

feel free to email me if you have any specific questions!

good luck

Karen

Hi, I am a senior NP in the UK. ALthough NPs were originally community based I disagree with a previous post there are many NPs now in acute hospital settings such as the one that I work in. However as already said it is very different to how you work in the states and there is at present no NMC registration of advanced practitioners although this is very soon going to change.

The roles of the NP within acute hospital settings vary greatly in the UK and can range from very task orientated and doing extended roles such as cannulation, male catheterisation and venepuncture to roles much more in line with what you may be used to working as autonomous practitioners with supplimentary prescribing qualifications.

The NP jobs in my location are rarely advertised and there is much competition for them although this may well change when advanced practice regulations from the NMC are put into place.

If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
