Nurse Practitioner Programs

Published

I am a pre- nursing student right now and my eventual goal is to become a family nurse practitioner. Would receiving a BSN from a community college that just started awarding BSN's about 5 years ago put me at a disadvantage? Would I have a better chance being accepted into a NP program coming from a big name university? All help is greatly appreciated!

I don't think that it will matter where your BSN is from as long as you have a good GPA.

I can't see that it would be any sort of disadvantage. A BSN is a BSN...passing NCLEX is what matters!

I agree with the others. Keep your GPA high (above 3.5 is best but at minimum 3.3) Also make sure that your school is accredited.

I guess that pretty much sums it up! Thanks for all of your replys

Ive never heard of a Bachelors program out of a Community College. Which school if you don't mind me asking?

It's St. Petersburg College, in St. Petersburg, FL. They offer only a few bachelor's programs and nursing is one of them. There is no admissions requirement for the school, except for the nursing program of course. It's transitioning into state college, but VERY slowly.

Their nursing program is actually pretty decent- the NCLEX pass rate was near 85% for the past year.

Hope that answered your question and thanks for the post!

Personally, I wouldn't consider an 85% pass rate good. My school had a 95-98% pass rate and a lot of semesters were 100%. Maybe that is good in comparison to other schools in the area? 85% would make me nervous, because studying for NCLEX doesn't really do that much imo, either you learned it in school or you're not going to know it.

Compared to other community colleges in the area its great. USF is 20 minutes away and they have a 100% pass rate all the time. Most nursing schools in Florida Universities are great with 92% and higher pass rates (USF, UM, UF, FSU, UCF, FAU, FIU, FGCU). Community colleges are another story unfortunately... but for the cheap tuition compared to the Universities, it's such an attractive option.
