NP. Maybe? Maybe Not?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello, everyone. I am new to this cite and would very much appreciate some feedback. I graduated two years ago with a bachelors in English Communications and is applying to a few direct entry accelerated MSN programs for non-nursing backgrounds. I have no prior experience in nursing and have not done well in the past in sciences or maths. I want to pursue this because I want a rewarding career that I can find fullfilling and pays well. Nursing has always interest me, but I fear because of my weakness in science I may not be able to do well in the program. Does anyone have any suggestions for me.

Please don't let that stop you if you have your heart set on it. Science and math were on the bottom of my list of strong suits as well, and I made it, you can too. Given your educational achievements thus far, you already know how to apply yourself to your studies and make the grade. You'll simply put more effort into the tougher subjects. It'll be the same as you go through nursing school. You might breeze through pedi but get stuck on ob. Really apply yourself to your anatomy and physiology courses though. Once you get out of rn school, the math part is way more tolerable given the availability of books, references, tips that nurses and units share with each other. Go For It!

My math and sciences were weak also, but I really loved A&P, micro, and pharmacology. Chemistry was another matter. I'm pretty sure I got the mercy "C" in chemistry but it really hasn't impacted me so much at this level (first year out of RN school.)

I took an ADN program at our local community college and it was managable as far as the sciences were concerned.

There's an accelerated program at Loyola here near Chicago that's supposed to be very good, but it's expensive and really fast paced. I think the nursing core stuff needs time to sink in and assimilate and 13 or 14 months just isn't enough time.

I decided against the accelerated program even though I have a BA in political science. The program I graduated from had a very diverse group of people, all ages and from different countries. It made for some interesting discussions.

Good luck!

While you have to have a solid basis in anatomy and physiology, it's not the only part of the job. Go into with the knowlege that you're going to have to study those subjects especially hard. If you're determined, you'll get through it.
