North Philly

Does anyone work for or know anything about North Philadelphia Health System?

I worked for NPHS in pool positions. The pool rates were very good, and you usually worked as much as you wanted. Being on staff was not beneficial as they offered very little to full time nurses

The 2 hospitals are in very bad and dangerous neighborhoods, the parkig lots are unsafe.

No matter what unit you work on, every patient seems to have a current or past history of a psych disorder and/or drug abuse. You see and treat the same patients over and over again, usually from the neighborhood with conditions exacerbated and complicated by their drug addictions

It was obvious that most of the medical staff, did not care about the population that they treated.

I worked there during the mid 90's, This is just my experience and honest observation. Hope it helps

Thanks for the insight. The neighborhood is not a problem for me. I used to run the needle exchange program in Philly. Not only am I used to the situation in North Philadelphia, this is where I want to work. Unfortunately, as you pointed out, it is this population that needs help the most, but few people care.

As far what they offer permanent nurses-- sounds like it might not be a good training ground for new nurses. Thanks, again!

I had clinical at GMC in nursing school I also volunteered at the Ridge Center doing health assessments. I agree with the problem of patient care but as far as I know I thought they were looking for new nurses. Good luck!

Thanks for the imput!

I just want to say THANKS for being willing to work with this very difficult population! Addicts need all the help that they can get, and I think that folks get burned out pretty quickly.
