NJ/NY Residency Programs

U.S.A. New York

Hi everyone!

I just wanted to ask your opinion if it is possible for an RN-BSN student who is graduating in May 2014 to be eligible to apply for a New Grad Residency Program? I graduated in Dec 2011 with an ADN and passed my NCLEX in May 2012. I transferred straight to a university to get my BSN as a full time student and have never practiced with my RN license. I will be graduating in May 2014 with my BSN-RN and technically I am still like a new grad without experience. Will I be qualified for Nurse Residency Programs? Thank you for your help!

Check the requirements. Most require a license less than 6 (sometimes up to less than 12months ) months old. You will likely be an old new, inexperienced grad as you will have has an unused 2-year old license when you graduate in May.

But check the various hospitals. Some requirements are less than 6 months experience. And then you would meet the requirements. In my area the two major hospitals specify BSN within 6 months of graduation AND licensing. Another system states >6 months experience.

Did you have clinical experiences in your RN-BSN program ? I know many of the online RN-BSN programs require you to be actively working as a clinical nurse as there is limited field/clinical work. If you had clinical rotations in your program that you had the opportunity to keep your clinical skills current this may be to your advantage.

Most facilities have their applications online as well as the requirements and qualifications. You likely need to apply now for the round that includes May graduates.
