I'd like to ask anybody who knows what state is easiest as to getting eligibility to take NCLEX? What is the first step that I should do, IELTS or NCLEX? Thank you in advance.

Hi and welcome to the site

I would suggest doing plenty of reading on here as plenty of people have expressed their experiences with the various bBON's. I would definately recommend reading the sticky Primer to working in the USA. A lot would depend on which state you want to work, although with reading you will discover that CA is not recommended for initial state, each state has their own requirements for foriegn trained nurses and if endorcing may have to do something different for example initial BON meet all requirements but want to endorse to New York then you still have to do CVS before you will get issued a license

Good luck and remember NCLEX is only part of the process and really towards the end of your journey before finding an employer and a petitioner

well i heard from some that new mexico is pretty quick. but i think waiting for 3 months for your eligibility from CALIFORNIA is pretty reasonable. hmm i think you might as well go for your nclex first then you can take the language exams provided youre confident youre gonna pass the language exams in one shot. calif doesnt require cgfns

NM is about three months, same as Vermont. CA is usually longer, plus they do not issue a license when you pass the exam, only a piece of paper and that cannot be endorsed, since there is no license number.

Most states do not have a language requirement either, that is for the Visa Screen Certificate that is required only for immigration purposes.

Thank you for your replies. I'm hoping I could work in either NY, NJ or PA in the future where my relatives are. I tried checking NY state and please correct me about my understanding on the process.

First thing is to apply to CGFNS for the CVS for NY wherein they will verify my education and then they will forward it to NYSED. Then, NYSED will determine my eligibility to take NCLEX? Is this correct?

Do I need to pass CGFNS exam?

Assuming I pass NCLEX, can I also endorse NY license to other states?

If I start with New Jersey for initial licensure, can I get endorsement to NY or do I have to undergo again the CES?

May I ask which state is faster in the process?

Thank you all for your help.

If you are looking at NY then no you do not need CGFNS exam, there are only a few states that actually require it. If you go to NJ and then endorse to NY like I said before you still have to get CVS done. You can endorse your licence to any state as long as you meet their requirements but be aware you may need a SSN before they will actually issue you with the licence

Thanks silverdragon102. So does it mean that NY has its own evaluation different from other states (CVS) which is different from CES? I saw the application for foreign grads for NJ and they are requiring TOEFL? Is IELTS not applcable? And also they ask about SSN, how do you obtain that?

Has anyone tried getting to NJ? I hope you can advice me what state is easiest in getting eligibility.

Thank you and I appreciate your help.

Sincerely,

Nina

Do not focus on which has the easiest eligibility as you will need to endorse to where you actually wish to work. And that can take much longer.

NJ requires the CES for initial licensure or endorsement. NY requires the CVS for initial licensure as well as endorsement. And the CES is not accepted for NY, and the CVS is not accepted for NJ.

PA actually requires the CGFNS exam for initial licensure, but it is not required for NJ and NY.

The other thing to pay attention to is that NY does not have any hospitals that are petitioning foreign grads right now, have not come across any over the past two years or so. Even tough if you graduated from nursing school in NY, so that is something to consider.

Now I understand. Thanks for that. I saw from your previous posts that if you're foreign-trained nurse, it is much better to go for NY state for initial licensure. Do you still vote for that regardless of the availability of hospital jobs in NY? I graduated from the Philippines 2006. Thank you.

Be aware that even if you go to NY for initial licence and then go to another state to work if you need CES you still have to get it done. Much better to decide where you want to live and then decide on a BON

Please take a look at the dates of the posts when I recommended that. More than a few years ago. At that time, there were only two states or so that did not require the CGFNS exam, CA and NY.

And we all know that significant changes have come around since then. There are only a handful of states that require the CGFNS exam, and NY was also the only one to grant a hard license back then.

I only recommend NY if you are actually going to work there............for no other reason because of the time that it takes and the CVS cannot be used for any other state. And since there are no hospital jobs, do not recommend it at all.

I felt it on my own...I took forst NCLEX and failed because the english have to be proficient to have you understand the questions with double meaning.

I have taken than IELTS (easier for me) and than of course...NCLEX was very easy to prepeare for!

Good luck...get down for English test!
