New to Oasis

Published

Hi nurses,

I may be starting a visiting nurse job soon and have been told that they use OASIS. I looked into this briefly and it looks like a NIGHTMARE! I hope I am wrong. Would someone please tell me what the learning curve is on this and how they like the program. Do you chart on a laptop?

Thanks,

Don't let the Oasis scare you. The latest version of Oasis is Oasis C. It started in January. The biggest problem I have when I review the Oasis are nurses skipping questions. You must answer all questions, and fill in the grey areas with other information about the patient. Remember most ADL questions refer to safely perfoming a task. The questions flow, and after you do them enough, its not that difficult at all. The tranfer Oasis requires more info than it used to, the recert Oasis a little less than it did. The discharge Oasis is not difficult either. As far as using laptops, only if your agency has invested in point of care software, some are still using paper, for now. many changes coming up in the future with payments and coding, but this Oasis will be around a while.

Thanks for the info--I know that it all takes time. I'll take a deep breath and dive in!

ugh, OASIS. I just learned it, just one of those paperwork things that you get used to. My director gave me a book that details each question. The key word in each question is "safely."

You may have a pt that can put on their pants by themselves, however, if it takes them 45 minutes and they have to struggle, you have to assume that this is NOT "safe."

I do my OASIS on the computer. After I did it 20 times, I learned which questions I needed to make a note about, and did it at home or in the office.

Have fun with this one :)

It's great that you received a book...every little bit helps. I will keep what you said in mind and try to "have fun" with it!

Thanks!

if your agency doesn't give you a copy of that book, you can view it online,,,just google "medicare oasis c chapter 3"

come on over to the home health forum, you will get lots of good info there.

thank you so much! and i will be visiting you on that site! :redpinkhe
