New Grad

Published

Specializes in ER, Mother/Baby.

I am very excited to be starting my nursing career on the mother/baby unit. From the day I started nursing school I always said I would not work M/S when I graduated and God answered my prayers. Hopefully I can eventually get into L/D and next fall go back to school to become a CNM/NP.

Well, good for you! I know that is my least favorite area!

On Friday, I accepted a position on a Mother/Baby unit, also. I am a new Grad who started in the ED and did not like it. I hung in for three months because I was hoping that one day I would just fall in love, but it hasn't happened. I also have guilt for jumping ship when the managers took a chance on a new Grad and I was told how well I caught on.

I actually went to nursing school to become a L/D nurse, but somehow got off course. It is a blessing to have not one, but two opportunites in specialties in this economy. I have been thanking God every chance I get . I am now able to follow my heart.

Congrats to you!

To aspiring2bNP: What city/hospital were you hired into? I've been out of school almost 9 months looking for a new grad mother/baby position and still no luck (I live in the bay area). Thank you!

what is the position during paracentesis procedure?

Specializes in ER, Mother/Baby.

Usually semi-fowlers, about 45 degree angle from what I remember.

Specializes in Medical Surgical, long term care.

Wow...congrats to you!!

I graduated from school two years ago, currently working on a med-surg unit, but i honestly have to say I dont enjoy it at all. Since I started Nursing School my goal has been to work in a Maternal Child Health Unit but havent had any luck :-( its so depressing at times. Any tips you can give on how did you get the position? Thanks

Thank you so much. Actually I applied to every L&D and Mother/Baby posting I would find and at the interview I just told the manager how being a RN in OB has always been my passion and that the hospital has lots of room for me to grow in my profession and I also told her of my long term plans in OB. I guess she just could see how excited I was for the specialty and decided to give a go. Good Luck I hope you get what you want!

I want to know within a three month period, how did you change specialties? That's amazing, ever since my OB rotation in nursing school, I loved it especially the mother/baby unit. I am in a med-surg unit sighs! The manager and the staff are awesome but I do not like med-surg. After reading your post, you are inspiration that you can change specialties in a short period of time.

I would also be interested in knowing what city/hospital the OP was hired into. I've been running around getting certifications (NRP, ACLS), networking, talking to old professors, and looking all up and down the state of California for opportunities to get into OB. It's amazing how difficult it is to switch into this speciality. I'm making slow, but steady progress though! It's just taking a long time.

Congrats and good luck!!!! :-)
