Hi Everyone!
I'm a new grad currently in the job-seeking phase of nursing. I'm primarily interested in L&D but am having a difficult time finding part-time position available so am considering doing the med/surg thing for a year or two for the experience. There is a part-time position available for acute rehab at a hospital near me. Can anyone tell me what types of pt's I can expect on this type of floor and if this would be a good place for a new grad to start? There is also an intermediate care position open....what would be the main differences between the patients I would come accross between the two units?

Well, I'm a new grad also, I too want OB, but I was offered a position on M/S, and since I had not heard anything from OB yet I decided to take the position. Anyway, from what I know, you can expect mainly CVA pts, also hip and knee replacement pts on a rehab floor, I think it would be a good place to start, but I chose M/S because of the variety of things I will be exposed to. I am not sure about intermediate care, but I think these patients may be ones that require more care than M/S, but not critical enough for ICU, but I really do not know. Good luck to you!!

bean 76, when i first got my nursing license i originally wanted L&D as well...however i was kinda thrown into medical/pediatric nursing. When our pediatric census is down, i work the medical side which is everything from 18 years and up, all different mediacl problems ranging from ESRD to COPD. But i will tell you i have been exposed to so much working with all age groups that i feel fortunate to have this experience. i would still like to some day try L&D, but i am glad when i was starting out i was exposed to more than that. I think you would gain lots of knowledge and experience on either of those floors. hope this was helpful.

most of the grads in my class that only wanted part time went into float pool. They are pleased with their choice because they can generally work when they want and they get a wide variety of experiences.

I thought it was almost impossible to get a job part time and/or as pool being a new grad??
Are there part time jobs out there with proper orientation after you graduate???
