Dear All,

My fiancee and myself have just landed jobs in Phoenix. We should be there within the month - hooray!!!!

Can anyone give me some info regarding any the following list of queries? I am trying to be as prepared as possible for when we arrive.

Many thanks, looking forward to the sun!!!

List of queries

1) what neighbourhoods (or rental agents) should I look at (quiet, houses rather than apartments, good restaurants nearby etc)

2) how much is taken from your pay in taxes etc.

3) what is a reputable car dealer to visit

4) is car insurance expensive

Any other info would be most welcome.

Thanks all.

First, which hospital will you be at? Phoenix area is huge, Scottsdale alone is over 120 sq.miles.

Congratulations on finally getting over there. I lived in AZ for about 14 years, that is why I am asking which facility...............then I can tell you more.

We will be starting at St. Joseph's Hospital in August.... I hope we like it as much as you did (you must have done if you stayed for 14 years!).

Many thanks.

Are you going to be working in PICU there?

That was one of my favorite hospitals to work at.............................really missed leaving there, worked agency in St. Joe's in ER, PICU, Nursery ICU, Neuro ICU, CVICU, Trauma ICU, MICU, and SICU. Think that pretty much covers it all. PICU was one of my favorites..

As soon as my brain starts working, I will send you the info that you are looking for...............

I live in North-east Phoenix. I could send you last sunday classified if you give my you address. my e-mail [email protected]

Phoenix is HUGE!!!! I'm paying $1100 for a 3 bed-room house with a livingroom/dining/kitchen/2 bath large backyard, in golf resort neighborhood. Very upitty, actually I don't pay that much, just seperated from husband, now living with mom. Anyway, I'll help where i can. Car insurance is VERY expensive.

I don't know what I was thinking! Google to Arizona Daily Star. That's our big newspaper, look in the classifieds. Northern Phx. Eatern Phx. and Scottsdale are the better neighborhoods. Paradise valley has alot of rentals near the mall that are in a good price range, and it's a nice neighborhood. The mall there is awsome!

You will find Phoenix cheap compared to the UK, especially London. We pay about $1100/year for car insurance, one with full coverage, one with the basic. We just bought a house on the outskirts in a town called Surprise, it would be a drive to St. Joe's, for $170,000. It's a 5 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath, 2287 sq ft. The price included granite kitchen counters and all appliances. Plus, it has a decent sized garden. The best is it will be brand new and should be ready in Sept./Oct. time. You will pay alot more in town.

You will be in a shock with the heat. Especially in August. :angryfire But if you think you will head south in the afterlife you will be prepared. :rotfl:

Not sure how much you will be taxed. It is based on your marital status and the number of dependents. And I am married with 3 kids so yours would be alot different. Don't forget to take the health insurance. Not sure how much St. Joes expects you to pay towards it, if anything.

Congrats on the new job. You can pm me if you want.

Just wanted to add a website.

This will have rentals, news and temperatures.

Well done, we are also on our way, so any advice about arriving, renting ect will be great. cheers Belinda

Chain of resturants called the "Big Tomato" if I remember correctly.

Fabulous salad bar and everything else. All one price.............

Oscar Taylor's at 24th St. and Camelback for ribs.

(Your hospital is at 3rd avenue and Thomas.)

Central divides the city, east side are the streets, the west side are called avenues. Thomas ----Indian School---Camelback to give you some idea. These are each about one mile apart.

You have to go to the Biltmore Hotel for Sunday brunch......24th street between Lincoln and Camelback. The grounds are also gorgeous.

I have a friend that was just here visiting, who is a nurse in Scottsdale. Send me your e-mail and I will forward it to her. She can probably answer many more questions for you.

It's "Sweet Tomato", my FAVORITE resturant. They often have cupons in the Sunday paper. There's one at Peoria and I-17 , just east of the Metro Center. You'll soon learn what that is. It is a big mall with a roller coaster next to it. Sweet Tomato is just across the free-way. There is ALOT there. I'll have to check out the Biltmore. Sounds good!

Sure wished there was a Sweet Tomato in the NE side of town. For all the restaurants in town, that is surely lacking.

Thanks everyone for the advice, I have certainly learned a great deal. One remaining question that I do have:

If I am working at St. Joe's which areas/neighbourhoods would be good if I don't want to commute for more than an hour?
