Need a vet tech...

Oh yeah he's a two year old GSD who allredy had hip displasia, and he weighs about 100-120.

I'm not the vet tech, but I am so sorry for you and your pooch. I really think you need to take him to one of those 24 hour emergency places because you don't know if he has internal injuries/internal bleeding and the degree of injury should be determined. Also, I think a vet told me this, Ibuprofen causes kidney damage in a dog and should not be given to them. I hope all goes well and it is just something minor. Please keep us posted.

we dont have any 24 vet clinics here, i dont even know if there is one in the whole state, but if there is one it is prob in the capital city and thats 2.5 hours from here. The best I can do about getting him seen by another vet is wait til tommorrow and take him to a town that is about an hour from here.

The vet said ibuprofen was okay, I looked it up on line just to make sure and it said it can cause ulcers when used for 2-3 weeks, With his breathing being what it is i HAD to give him something, he cant rest he is in pain so I think the benefits outweigh the risks but Im still not sure if Im doing all I can.

Poor baby dog. Fellow pet lover and mother here and it is the worst when the doggie is hurting. My thoughts are with you. I wouldn't give Darvocet though unless directed by Vet. Take him in ASAP tomorrow for another opinion. Good luck.

okay just had a thought prompted by my bf, what about benedryl, the poor guy cannot rest. I know you can give benedryl to dogs does it make them sleepy? And with his breathing so labored, wont it relax the bronchials? does that seem okay to anyone else?

Btw my cat may be having kittens tongiht too. LOL the maternity ward is in the BR and the ICU in the LR, Ill be your nurse tonight lol, I'll be here playing animal hospital all by myself.

I hope you can see the vet again tomorrow, and that s/he might be able to do more for you and your doggie.

What a helpless feeling to know a baby of ours is suffering. I hope he's a bit better tomorrow....

I give my dogs Benadryl. Actually, my vet gave me the ok. Bing had an allergic reaction to ant bites and the Benadryl knocked him out. Thank goodness.

the best thing you can do if you can not get to anyone who can help is just try and comfort him. i am not a vet tech. i worked in a couple animal hospitals as a "tech" but i do not have the degree. what one would worry about with trauma and labored breathing is a collapsed lung or fluid filling the pleural cavity. it could also just be anxiety so dont freak out.

if you find a darvocet please dont give it to your dog. propoxyphene can cause convulsions in dogs and acetaminophen needs to be closely regulated in dogs.

and just FYI never ever ever ever give acetaminophen to cats/ its fatal. they metabolize quite differently.

Thank you for responding, I hear air moving in all areas of his chest with no real sounds of distress other than some grunting, of course I am baseing my findings on humans, how many lobes do dog lungs have?

He seems to be resting better since the benedryl.

If he would tolerate it do you think ice would be a good plan? I had to help him turn over a while ago and that seemed to help some too.

The cat doesn't seem to be doing anything thank goodness.

I have NO idea when she is due, I didn't even realize she was preggers until a week or so ago, she is two and has never come in heat that I knew of and has never had kittens despite being outside alot, I kinda thought maybe she was infertile.....teach me to think. But during the whole get the dog loaded and to the hosp. my four y/o was petting the cat and said EWWW mommy Isis got blood on my hand...... so i thought she was maybe in labor of course she'll prob have them tommorrow and I will have another sleepless night lol.

This dog is the worst escape artist in the history of dogs, the guy that hit him said he was chasing a rabbit and ran right out in front of him. Hopefully he will be okay and maybe he will also be less inclined to try to get out of the fence and off his run.

Well the second opinion is a broken pelvis, it's broke in three places. He put him on po abx and pain meds (rima... something) said giving him osteoform vit. is a good idea and benedryl is good too and I was underdosing him by half( better than overdosing I guess and at half he still slept) I was way off on his weight he weighs about 80 lb. BTW said Ibuprofen is BAD idea, the other vet said to give it.

He could have surgery but it is prohibitively expensive, so we are keeping him still and letting him heal on his own the vet (actually both of them) say he should be just fine with this. There is apparently no way to cast or splint a dog pelvis ( who knew)

He doesn't have any other apparent serious injuries, I was very concerned when by 3pm he still had not urinated, the vet said he is prob holding it cause it hurts,(guess he wont be hikeing his leg anytime soon, his plans for world domination are over for a while) he did cath him at the clinic and it looked fine if a bit concentrated.

He ate quite a bit of food earlier and is drinking water well.

Hopefully he will recover well and have a little better sense about himself.

Thanks for letting us know how your dog is doing-by the way what's his name? The poor thing, my heart goes out to him and you. I know how much of a "mission of life" it is for a dog to be able to chase rabbits-he's probably going to have to find a new mission in life. By the way, if it was Rimadyl that was prescribed for him, be sure that he eats something with it. A shepard I had (died of cancer a couple of years ago) was prescribed that for arthritis and wound up getting an ulcer from it only after being on it for 3 weeks. The vet said I neglected to feed him with the tablet-would have been nice if he told me about it when he prescribed the stuff.

I am hoping for the best for him as I am sure he is in good hands with his 'mommy' taking care of him. Please update us on how he is doing.
