i need your opinion about a question...

the question stated that an adolescence was encouraged to excercise and eat healthier because he had diabetes that run in the family...is this,

a) secondary prevention

b) primary prevention

c) disease prevention

d) tetiary prevention

what would you have picked?

Featured Replies

I would choose secondary prevention: because diabetes in the family is a risk factor that has been identified; so the recommendation for healthy diet and exercises are implemented specifically for his/her high risk condition.

I would have to agree with secondary prevention because of early detection of the disease, and because of the risk factors

secondary

See, I would have gone with primary, because it is part of the teaching that nurses do before someone is known to have a problem. I'm probably wrong though. : )

the answer was primary prevention because of the risk factors in his family...and i picked disease prevention which is primary prevention...because he isn't diagnosed with it yet

so what is the diference between "disease prevention" and primary prevention?

I don't think there is a difference between disease prevention and primary prevention. It takes place before a diagnosis. Even if a family has it as a risk factor, the adolescent does not have the disease, and the actions he is taking may help prevent him getting it.

I agree with your answer...I would've picked primary prevention because he doesn't have the disease yet...eventhough his family has a hx of diabetes you are trying to prevent him from developing this problem

c) disease prevention

d) tertiary prevention

this is a straight knowledge question:

  • primary prevention includes actions to protect against disease and disability, such as getting immunizations, ensuring the supply of safe drinking water, applying dental sealants to prevent tooth decay, and guarding against accidents as well as basic activities of a healthy lifestyle: good nutrition and hygiene, adequate exercise and rest, and avoidance of environmental and health risks.
  • secondary prevention is to identify and detect disease in its earliest stages, before noticeable symptoms develop, when it is most likely to be treated successfully. with early detection and diagnosis, it may be possible to cure a disease, slow its progression, prevent or minimize complications, and limit disability.
  • tertiary prevention programs aim to improve the quality of life for people with various diseases by limiting complications and disabilities, reducing the severity and progression of disease, and providing rehabilitation.

primary prevention all the way!
