Welcome to culture-shock! I'm not trying to be facetious, but as one who also was out for years, things are radically altered from the good ol' days when the nurses could pick from a bazillion job offers and prizes for signing on like cruises and big sign-on bonus checks.

Imagine my surprise when I expected the big welcome parade failed to materialize. Pretty much you can count on not being hired if you have less than a year of recent acute care experience. Just being honest-- the re-entry nurses are at the bottom of the totem pole, even below new grads.

You are now actually competing with an armada of new grads that literally cannot get a job. At all. Anywhere.

I'm really curious to know what you mean by the way you've been treated. Rude interviewers? Calls not returned? (wanna be prepared if I ever need to change jobs).

Sorry you are going through this. Best wishes for a successful job hunt! :)

nursel56,

Thank you for responding. I thought I was the only one being treated like I had zero value as a nurse. It disgusts me that my experience has no value. As we all know the extent of knowledge and competence we all had as new grads! I am curious to know your experiences. I think you hit the nail on the head in reference to what I meant by how I was being treated!!! I am more than ready to leave it all behind me and do something that values me more than yesterday's trash:madface::madface::madface:!!!!

They act like you are bothering them, they ignore you, never return calls or e-mails, never reply in any way to online job applications, etc. I only had one decent interview, everything was going great, I would be a good fit at this Cancer Hospital. . . her supervisor nixed the whole thing. Not enough "recent acute care" experience. Very discouraging!!

The economy seems to have slumped right at the time huge numbers of people graduated. Some people have had better luck with LTC jobs--

I hope things turn around soon for you!

I know that it's very difficult but try not to take everything so personally. Recruitment is a reflection of supply & demand. When nurses are scarce, we get 'courted', wined & dined... but now that there are a surplus of nurses (in relation to available jobs) it is just the opposite. HR folks get hundreds of applications/resumes for each job that is posted. They are hard-pressed to keep up with the volumes, and certainly are not staffed to respond to each individual inquiry. The best we can hope for is an automated system that acknowledges receipt of your information.

This mess isn't going to last forever. In a couple of years, we'll probably be back to hiring bonuses & other goodies.

To the OP - hiring managers are sometimes very 'cool' to applicants who gave up nursing for a period of time because this indicates a lack of committment to their career. I'm just saying . . .
