Need help with Microbiology

(I posted this on the summer I micro club thread, but so many students are starting later....)

I'm supposed to start tonight, but I'm going to miss the first day of class. lol (My daughter is going to be given an award at her Jr. High awards ceremony.)

So, the instructor told me to read ch1 and ch2. I am doing the objective/study guide questions she has posted. There are 16 questions, but a couple of them I can't find a direct answer!

We are using Microbiology by Tortora, Funke and Case.

#3 Give examples of pathogens, opportunists and normal flora.

I know that E. coli and S. aureus are opportunists. I can't find, or I'm just overlooking answers for the pathogens & normal flora.

#5 Give viral structures and the molecular composition of each structure.

What in the world does this mean???

#6 Know the levels of classification from domains to strains.

Not sure....Genus, species, family..etc? I don't see this in the book!

#7 Recognize and explain the proper scientific nomenclature of m/o's: genus, species, and strains.

Does this mean
Genus species STRAIN
(The Genus is capitalized, the species is capitalized ...the strain is????? After the genus is spelled out once, it can be appreviated the subsequent times:
E. coli
..... Nomenclature must be underlined or in italics?

It's sad, I can't even understand the first chapter!

#3 Give examples of pathogens, opportunists and normal flora.

Some pathogens: S. aureus, Clostridium tetani, Clostridium botulinum, Clostridium perfringens, Bacillus anthracis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis (I have more if you need more names)

Oppourtunistic bacteria: E. coli, Streptococcus pyogenes, Candida albicans

Normal microflora: Staphylococcus epidermidis, Corynebacterium species, Streptococcus species, Neisseria, Brahamella

#5 Give viral structures and the molecular composition of each structure.

animal virus: (spherical shape) structures include--capsid (segments called capsomeres), nucleic acid, sometimes an envelope

plant virus: (rod shaped)

bacterial viruses (bacteriophage): (cuboidal head) structures--capsid, nucleic acid, sheath, baseplate, tail fibers, tail pins.

Sorry, I can't help w/molecular compositions...I don't remember off the top of my head.

I'm also not sure about strains. We didn't learn them...Maybe you could do a google search.

I forgot to add...A strain is the same thing as a SUB-SPECIES.

Genus, species, and sub-species. If I'm not mistaken, the strain (or sub-species) is italicized.

edit: Can you tell the Microbiology was my favorite class of all times?! :uhoh3: And, about nomenclature, I always underline if I'm writing, but when I'm typing I use Italics.

Thanks soooo much!! (I remember reading about envelope...gotta go scan the book again to find it!)

E. coli and S. aureus would be both opportunists and normal flora, is that correct? I know they both live in/on the body naturally, but can become pathogenic.. ex: E coli has a different strain that is pathogenic, etc.

I'm sure I will love Micro as well, but with the confusion I feel right now, I'm looking forward to A&P 2 in July. lol

Thanks again!!

Do you know anyone in the class? If so how about sending a tape recorder with them? That way you won't miss anything. God bless you in micro I hated it! Good luck

Right. Oppourtunistic bacteria can cause endogenous infections, or infections that originate from the person's body. For example, E. coli is an indigenous microflora found in the large intestine, but it can cause a UTI, hence, it's oppourtunistic.

crb613: No, I don't know anyone that I know of. It's not even the main school that I attend, but one in the same district. The college where I usually attend has the microbiology during summer 1 and summer 2. This class starts at the begining of "maymester" (today) and ends at the end of summer 1. I wanted it like this b/c I didn't want to take this and A&P 2 (my summer 2 class) at the same time during the summer. Thanks for the luck! (I think I'm going to need lots of it!!!)

LeiaT, thanks...that's what I thought. :)

Did anyone use Microbiology by Tortora, Funke and Case (8th edition) and type the lecture notes that I could have/buy at a smallllllll price?

I downloaded the lecture notes that the instructor put online (a student's notes) and they were awful!! I know the coverage may be different, but I like to study as many different things as possible.

thank you, and thank you! :) lol

i would just have hubby only go, but she won the science award from her high school (she takes only biology at the high school), and we didn't know about it! grrrrrr so, this one is for the jr. high. i'm not sure what award she is getting, but at least i get to attend one awards ceremony for her. luckily, it's only the first day of class.

i'll be up late tonight, looking at the ppt's and reading! thanks again!!!!

:p thanks garn2b, :kiss :roll . micro is absloutely killing me:chair: :chair: :chair:  . any help like this is most appreciated. :yeah: :smiley_ab .:p

I'm sure you'll do great in Micro....Maybe someone will let you borrow their notes tomorrow, although they probably won't be as good as yours would have been, it'll give you an idea of what the teacher covered.
