what r u waiting 4? Go for what you want and don't sttle for less. If u want to be an RN then don't settle being and LPN, why would u? If you are at Marshall then it would probably be easier to get in their program but if not go for where you can get in quicker and get out faster. Then come up to CAMC Teays Valley Hospital and get a job with me. Remember WE ARE... Marshall.

you may want to check with your state boards, but usually after one year of rn training you can sit for your lpn licensure. this way you can have your cake and eat it too. i went to lpn school first due to late notification of a closing to an rn program in nyc back in 1981. i quickly enrolled in the lpn program in westchester community college. it was the best thing that every happened to me at 18. i needed more time but most people can accelerate and get their lpn along with an rn license in 2 years or less. 10 years later i worked as a college health nurse and finished my undergraduate. i could have been a nurse practitioner but god rearranged my plans and i am a nurse health coach/supervisor. it is the coolest job in the world. so as the bible says, "do not despise small beginnings. god knows what he is doing. put your plans before him, he won't let you down. loved "we are marshall" we saw the late show last night. how neat to send a communication to someone who attends that school. bless you! colleen

I have not heard of WV offering the chance to sit and take the LPN boards after competing one year of RN school. To the original poster I would encourage you just to go on to RN school. You can apply at Marshall or St Marys, both of which are great schools. LPN school is actually pretty intense, especially time wise. I think you go M-F 8-4 for about a year, I honestly think I spent less time in my AD program than some of my friends spent in their LPN training but I may also be crazy :chuckle.

LPNs are great, however they get paid quite a bit less than RNs for doing almost the same job (if not working harder), have limited career options compared to a RN, have another profession (medical assistants) who are often in direct competition for employment and there are some movements to really limit lpns at hospitals now. There has been rumors for years about LPNs being phased out, I dont think this will be the case but the last time I looked the largest hospital in the state had no lpn openings.

I am not anti LPN, some of the best nurses I have worked with are LPNs and my personal opinion is that every pt should have a RN, LPN and CNA assigned to their care. The problem is my opinion doesnt matter. I have heard of one hospital here that recently removed LPNs from the ER and when I worked in an ICU lpns were no longer allowed to be hired in or to transfer in.

I don't think the larger, busier, tech-intense facilities of the area allow LPN's in ER, ICU, CCU, CVICU, or Trauma-ICU.

Being an LPN is not 'settling.'

Go for it! I am a student at Bluefield State and pursuing RN AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE DEGREE. I am 41 and this is it. Its a struggle on my family but in the end it will be worth it. Don't set yourself short pursue the RN.

I recommend that you apply to other RN schools in WV. They don't all necessarily have waiting lists. This is the time to apply. You might try the Glenville State College/WVU joint nursing program, if you are an instate student and your grades and prereqs meet their requirements.

i have been a nurse for 5 years and just want out of the whole hospital system. i want to help people but not when they are so acute. i was going to apply for a health coach position and i was wondering if you could give me a little hindsight into what it acutually entails. im really serious and would love all the information i could get.
