Need help with HW!

What I've come up so far.

Pt, age 44, lighting up a cigarette, set himself on fire. Burns chest and neck. admitted to burn center c/o a lot of SOB. was intubated to maintain airway.

Wow...there is nothing humorous about burn injuries. What a boneheaded thing to assign. If it were me, I would probably leave humor out on principle and accept the lost points.

So in your reading that you have done, what burn complications have you learned? I see you are making a connection between facial burns and airway -- good start! But yes, let us know what you've come up with so far, and we can go from there.

yeah. It's supposed to be a fun interactive presentation. my other classmates used celebrities as their patients, others involved aliens in their presentations.

Update:

pt was intubated bc of severe edema in airways. so pt suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burn covering 40% of his body. after intubation he was given paralytics. then fluids. NS? or LR?

You're missing humor, because situations like this aren't funny.

And, normally burn patients are given LR.

Burn patients typically need a lot of fluid resuscitation and are also at risk for electrolyte imbalances, which in turn also makes them high risk for cardiac dysrhythmias.

Of all the medical things you could try to find humor from, Burn patients and situations are probably one of the last ones you can find any humor from.

I would have to say that one of the most challenging things for a burn victim is not only the need for good IV access and to beware of losing body heat dependent on the degree of burns, but to look out for compartment syndrome which can occur from the swelling. A much needed fasciotomy will help to alleviate that potential problem.

I wonder if alteration in body image will prove funny when suicidal ideation occurs!

With a little effort you can get these answers yourself. In fact, a few of these answers have already been provided for you.

You can easily look this up and your teacher expects you to do your own work. More importantly I'm a little concerned that you are not hearing us when we tell you that burns are horrific and there is absolutely no way anybody will find humor in this topic. Well nobody who isn't some sort of psychopath which I'm a bit suspicious describes your teacher.

i understand what you mean. i was in tears watching cases of burn patients. and yeah im almost done with my case study. i jsut dont know how or when i can incorporate humor in my presentation.
