Hey everyone,
I'm here today to find some serious help. I was declined a position for an LNA training course at my local hospital, next option is to wait. However I called the VNA and they told me they were looking for someone to do visits. Pretty much going to people's houses and doing chores for them, considering it would be a good step if I wanted to get the experience, as well as a possible acceptance for the next training class available. However for right now, I was thinking it would be a good idea to call a local nursing home to get a more in depth view of life as a nurse. Being a guy, it might seem awkward, but that doesn't worry me much. Right now I'm just really stuck, I want to find a job in healthcare where I can get experience, however it is quite hard to find a job without any kind of licensure. Truly this is something I want to do, nursing or something like occupational therapy. What considerations or recommendations do you have? Should I go to a nursing home and talk with a nurse? Im very focused on school more than ever, I will be going full time next semester for sure. I thank you, wishing you the best.

Theodore,
I wish you the very best. It's such a difficult decision to make, but if you have it set in your heart to get a job in healthcare, and you feel confident about that--go for it! I really, really hope you get into your school like you are planning.
We definitely need more men in our field and I think it is a great idea to speak with a licensed nurse to get a "feel" for the career.
Good luck!

theo, what is "lna?" is that like license nursing assistant???
if you are going to school full time (next semester), i don't see why not take a quick course now? nursing assistant is only less than 6 weeks, you can go to school full time and one day of week on your time off from school you can work (at the hospital). it is nice to expose yourself to the field verses going in blind until clinicals. there are different ways, yes you can call your local nursing home, speak with the director of nursing and ask if you can shadow? but that is just a small % of nursing. the hospital is more in depth.
from a guy's point of view, i love my job. it was the best choice i've ever made when i was 21, (grief, that was 9 yrs ago). if no one hasn't said it already, let me. "the time will fly," before you know it, you'll be 25.....then 30.. so, it's a good start the you are planning at your age. as i've said before, nursing is a profession with many roles.....
good luck,
kal

each state has different names for their nursing assistants. for example, ohio calls them stnas (state trained nursing assistants), and new hampshire calls them lnas (licensed nursing assistants).
Couldn't agree with you more Mandy, time feels to fly so fast. Yes it LNA is licensed nurse assistant. However I cannot be enrolled in a course becuase i called the closest hospitals approx 25 35 minutes away. However i all are full and classes have already started. I will have to wait for about 3-6 months. Time will fly though! haha Ill get right on that position when its available next time.

I wouldn't worry about gender either. IMO long gone are the days of thinking nursing is only a womans job....seen many great male RN's, LPN's, and NAC's!
