Nurses Recovery

Published

For many years I have struggled with addiction. Almost two years ago, I was arrested and charged with felony possession of cocaine. I got out of jail the next day and immediatedly admitted myself into treatment where I lived for six months. Because it was my first offense, and I sought help right away the charge was reduced to a misdeamor. I have had the same job, since I have gotten clean and totally turned my life around. I am now in my third semester of pre-reqs for the Nursing Program. I hope to apply to the Nursing Program in Fall 09. I just recently tried to get a volunteer job at a local hospital and was denied because of my background. I was completely devastated and felt if I couldn't get a job volunteering...would I be able to be a Nurse? I contacted BON and they said I have to finish the program and then right lots of letter with my application explaining my charge and I may get my license and may not. It is a case by case scenario. So, I've decided I am NOT giving up. I refuse to let my mistakes get in the way of my dreams. I am very grateful for all my struggles without them I wouldn't be where I am today. I just need a second chance. On November 3rd, I will celebrate 22 months clean and sober and I have come along way.

I am so happy I found this forum. I know I am not alone.

Thanks, Sarah

Congratulations on turning your life around. If you stay clean and sober I know it will all work out. Hopefully someone who has been there and done that will come along and encourage you.

But know you're not alone. Lots of us addicts and alcoholics around here. :)

Hi Sarah! I was in the same boat before I got my license. I have a felony from 11 years ago related to drug use. I finished school and got my license 2 years ago. I basically had to explain to the BON what I did and what I had done to change. I honestly don't think you have anything to worry about. It's too bad that you couldn't volunteer at that place but there are plenty of other places out there that I'm sure will be willing to give you a chance. Good luck on your journey!!

People make mistakes, the board knows this. Just keep evidence that you are working a recovery program. The more you have to show the board, the better. Signature sheets from 12 step groups, letters from therapists, psychiatrists, AA/NA sponsors, employers, church members - all of these will illustrate your commitment to your recovery. Also, I don't know where you live, but I attend a support group for nurses who are addicts and/or alcoholics.

I hope this helps.

I went to nursing school with a felony on my record. I was able to secure a license by:

Doing my program in AA (lots of service)

Following the application process to the letter.(Us addicts have a tendency to go to the "lie" first)

Putting First Things First. (Recovery First...EVERYTHING else is secondary!!!) I mean children, husbands, jobs, bills, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, sickness, health, moods, etc.

The board will know if you are ready to be a nurse, believe you me!

Boards will screen your application with people in the community who will give a yea or nay related to your recovery.

Thanks for sharing! Hearing your story definitely gives me hope.

P.S I am also very lucky to be alive!

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THIS. YOu should have LOTS of evidence to back up your recovery when you write to the board. That is EXACTLY what they look for. They want GOOD evidence of a GOOD recovery.. and you will have a really great chance at getting your license.
