Hi Everyone,

For those who have experience in hiring moving companies:

I am moving from CA to OH. Anyone have recommendations on a REPUTABLE moving company?

Any info will help.

Cheers,

Vinnysca

I used North American when I moved from Arizona to Michigan. No damage and everything was perfect.

:balloons:

Used Bekin's when my mother passed away and had her things shipped to Arizona. Some chairs were sent to my sister's home instead of mine, and they had been labelled correctly, damage to glassware, etc. Way to many problems for me............... :uhoh21: :uhoh3:

I heard North American was pretty decent too.

When we moved from CA to OH we just moved ourselves & rented a big truck from Budget. It was a pain since we did all the work, but it wasn't too expensive.

United Vanlines worked well for us. From KS to FL it was actually cheaper than renting a U-Haul truck and doing it ourselves. Depending from where your move starts and where it ends there can be big fluctuations in the cost of renting a truck and doing it yourself. After using United for the first time and having everything done it won't be an option to do it ourselves anymore. Just make sure you pack everything yourself...they provide boxes for free...in order not to get ripped for packaging costs.

Good luck moving.

Vinnie,

I used both North American and United Van Lines, and I was happy with both of them. However, in both cases, my employer paid the fees (kind of high, I have to say).

You also have to know that these companies work through franchising - not a guarantee for the same level of service everywhere.

Another cheaper option: rent truck, get a bunch of friends to help load. To unload you can actually hire movers by the hour ...

You'll end up paying less than half.

Good luck

I just moved across the country in January. We rented a penske truck through monster.com it was some cheaper internet deal. Some one else has told me about a company where they drop the back of a truck off at your house, you load your things, and then they use the rest of the semi for there product and drop it off at your new house. I can't remember the name. I know moving companies are really expensive, especially that far away. Good luck!

I don't know if its the same company but I've used door to door storage for something similar.

Vinny

Just finished getting bids for moving to Virginia. My aunt and uncle moved their family from Conneticut to CA using Bekins. Good friends of mine moved from New Jersey using Bekins and loved them. I got a pretty good quote from Bekins. I'm a little leery of using a small outfit on a cross country move, so even though Bekins wasn't the cheapest (nor were they the most expensive), I've decided to go with Bekins for my move. Hope your seach for a moving company goes well!

Hey there,

Just wanted to say hello and say, I too just moved from Ca (San Diego) to IL, 9 months ago, and will be moving to Cincinnati, OH in July. Although, we don't have a moving company yet to do our move in the summer, I just wanted to say HELLO and find out where exactly you were going...

We've used Mayflower a couple of times. Both times were short trips, each one under a mile and half away, but we decided the cost was worth it just to not have to lug all that heavy stuff ourselves. The first time I was very happy with them. I felt like it was a bit expensive at the time (about $900 plus we gave a $100 tip for the two moving men, and we were a small family at that time and our only big really heavy item was a washer and dryer). The next time, I wasn't as happy with them. It seemed to me that the movers spent a lot of time kind of screwing around. That move cost us $1400. I was probably being pretty critical though because it was an extremely hot day, and in retrospect, I can understand why they didn't have a whole lot of hustle in their step. All in all, I was relatively satisfied with my experiences with them, but when it comes time for us to do that whole moving thing again, I think I would look for another company.

I've used movers a couple of times (and Ryder a few more! :) ) When I used Mayflower, the driver tried to charge me an extra $800 for extra weight. When we went back to look at our bill, our quoted weight was almost exactly the same so I gave hime nothing and wrote a letter to the company (who never got back to us and we never heard from the driver again).

For my last move, I used North American Van lines and was pleased with their service. Good luck.
