Need Adivse

Here is my problem: I am a new grad RN who is looking for career in trauma, NP, or a combination of the two. I have been offered two different ER positions. 1 is a small level 4 (11 beds) that that pays $2/ hr more plus better education emphasis. 2 is a level 2 (the largest in the region, 20 beds, acts as a level 1) whom I did my externship with (and can therefore put at least some level 2 experience on my resume).

In looking to the future, how much does the level designation of the hospital you have worked in matter to those hiring? Should I ignore the extra money (in total about $5,000 more per year) and go for the experience? I am looking for advise to weight the considerations of meeting my career goals of working in a larger level 1 center with my immediate needs of a good paying job.

I would have to say that since this is your first job, go for the money. The lower level and higher pay will work out better for your developing skills and organization. After a year of experience the other place will still hire you if you still want the high trauma rush... but they will also offer you the pay to get you with the experience under your belt.

Start your career slow and steady; you will enjoy it more, learn more and not burn out. Nursing is always a learning experience so get a good strong base before going into the deep-stuff.

Would go for the experience over the $$ this time if possible. Level IV is not going to have enough trauma for you to gain necessary experience. And...even if they get in some trauma, will quickly ship them out.

Even level II experience may or may not provide enough trauma - very dependent on the area and what they ship. Usually level IIs ship neuro and peds trauma right off the bat and may even ship more than that.

The second seems to be more in line with your goals. Either way, congrats on the offers! Lots of new grads seem to be having trouble find ANY positions.

I'd go with #2, myself.

I'd choose number 2.

The other important question is which do you want to DO the most?? Are you an adrenaline junkie and will never be happy until your in the thick of things?? Or are you intimidated by the acuity of the level II and would feel safe and comfortable in leverl IV?? that counts for more than the money.
