I am applying for 2nd degree programs for a BSN. I was suprised to learn that one program wants a HS transcript. Is this a common practice? I thought schools would only care about your college career if you already have a BS, and especially when it is a program where all applicants have degrees. How much weight do you think HS grades would carry?
I had lousy performance in HS because my school would only offer C credit on assignments that weren't typed. Since I had no access to a computer or typewriter, I did poorly on all my assignments. I also worked full time, and had a drunken father that needed to be babysat, picked up from parking lots, etc. I went from a "C/D" student to an "A" student as soon as I started college and moved out. I will just cringe if this little issue in HS keeps me out of nursing school!! My HS performance is so not indicative of my potential as a nurse.

I cringed as well and sent them in with the rest; remember they will see the change in gpa between H.S. and college and know how profoundly you have changed.
I never earned good grades in H.S.
It wasn't that I wanted bad grades in H.S. it was simply that I never saw why I should get good grades (A teacher saw my aptitude scores and told me I should be getting better grades in his class. I asked why and he just stood there with a stupid look on his face).
I'm glad you are not letting your early years set limits on your future!

I graduated high school 32 years ago!! When some of the schools wanted my HS transcript, I thought, "you have got to be kidding me!" I have a Ph.D., for heaven's sake! I called them and they wouldn't budge. So I had to get my HS transcripts sent to me and then send them to 2 nursing schools. It took weeks, probably because they were in long-term storage! LOL

I applied to a program that required a high school transcript (it too was second degree). In this litigious world we live in, I'm surprised no one has objected to this practice on the basis of age discrimination (obviously they can figure out how old you are based on the year you graduated).
But then community colleges, which are the first college experience for many folks of all ages, HAVE to have some sort of proof that you've graduated...
I think requiring a high school transcript for someone with at least ONE college degree (the fact that someplace made one of the posters with a PhD provide a high school transcript is no less than disgusting) is a waste of time, paper, and energy.
I got into my first choice program, so the waste of time involved in getting that transcript was even more ridiculous.

I was told by one school that "the NJ BON requires proof of graduation from high school." I *desperately* wanted to point out to the woman that yes, the BON requires RNs to have a high school diploma, *but* that they also specifically state that graduation from an accredited college will be accepted as proof of a HS diploma. But I kept my mouth shut, because I didn't want to be branded a "trouble-maker" before I even sent in my application. :icon_roll

Ha! I've got a story for you... not only did my program want a HS transcript, they wanted ALL of them and I went to 4 HS, one of which is closed! Talk about a nightmare... I had to call/write/fax/Fed-Ex overnight written consent at the tune of $25 and beg to get 3 of them and for two of those I had to jump through hoops since my records were too old to be on computer and had to be researched at the main district headquarters for the paper copy. No big deal right, except for the fact that my records were misplaced, the full-time worker was on vacation and the part-time worker couldn't find it... oh yeah and a hurricane warning was issued that week so offices were closed! I am not kidding, I almost missed the deadline!
Anyway, it worked out in the end but what a nightmare and, yes quite ridiculous I think.
Just get yours in ASAP and be done with it, LOL :)
p.s. They wanted proof that I completed Algebra in the 8th grade even though I completed two semesters of Calculus at the college level with an A.

I'm surprised these programs wanted HS transcripts. Mine didn't -- too bad, because my HS grades were a lot better than my first undergrad grades!

you win, hands down and bar none!! lol! :yeah::bow:
how ridiculous is that? if phd programs have transcripts, i think i would have been tempted to send that in with my high school one! (but i know what you mean about a quiet life!)

Yes, mixy's story wins! Wow, I think I would have aged 10 years trying to get those transcripts.
Ph.D. programs do have transcripts, and I just quietly sent mine in with the darn high school transcript. I mean, really! Do they really think I could have gotten a Ph.D. without graduating from high school? Maybe they thought I was a child prodigy or something.
