Hi Everyone!
Quick Question, I am a nursing student in maryland with 2 more semesters left. My husband is in the coast guard and got sent to flight school in florida. I decided to stay in Maryland and finish my degree with the plan of moving to our house in florida immediatly after graduating from nursing school. Can I register to take the Nclex in florida and be liscensed in florida right out of nursing school or will I have to take the nclex in maryland since thats where I attended school then try to transfer my liscense from md to fl?
I have tried to google this but as you know if gives you every possible answer haha
thanks!

I'm in the same boat as you. Husband PCSing, different state, etc. I've researched a lot too and from what I gathered, you should apply for a license with the board of nursing in FL, send your transcripts, etc, etc. they will decide if your degree is acceptable to FL standards, then you can take the nclex in MD or FL, following an acceptance, and send your results to FL board of nursing. If they don't accept your degree, get a MD license and transfer. Look up the military family licensing act on whether your state has a law that can accelerate your transfer of licenses. Some states, such as IL will allow a military spouse to get a temp license quickly and work until it transfers completely.

You can take the NCLEX wherever you please. You can physically sit for the test in Maryland for licensure in Florida. NCLEX is a national exam. You could take it in any state you want, regardless of where you went to school, for licensure in any state you want. I went to school in the same state I took NCLEX in and became licensed in because it's where I've lived my entire life. Many of my classmates came from out of state and were intending to move to still other states after graduation. Someone might, for example, go to nursing school in Massachusetts and take NCLEX in New York for licensure in Washington, DC.
And, to clarify, there is no such thing as "transferring a nursing license". Transfer implies that you exchange one license for another which is not true. If you are originally licensed in Maryland you don't transfer your license to Florida, you obtain a new license by endorsement and your license in Maryland remains valid as long as you pay the renewal fees and meet the CEU requirements.

Sort of. In answer to your question, you are not limited to taking your exam in the state where you went to school. You take the NCLEX as authorized by any state BoN. I don't know if the FL BoN allows you to physically take the exam in MD and then grants you a FL license. It may be easier to sit NCLEX in MD, get the MD license, and then get the FL license by endorsement (too bad FL isn't a Compact state). But you can certainly ask them. Seems unnecessarily expensive and time-consuming.
So. All you need to do is graduate, get on the plane, kiss your hubby, and sit NCLEX in FL. Why not do it that way? Apply to the FL BoN as soon as they'll let you (call and ask-- maybe last semester, or maybe not until your diploma is in hand) and then choose a test date there.

The way you could become licensed in FL is if you send your nursing application to the State of FL BON, they in turn would review your transcripts etc and then if it meets their requirements they will authorize Pearson Vue to issue you your ATT (just as if you send your nursing license application to MD and then MD BON would review, etc).If for whatever reason you paperwork/education doesn't meet the requirements, as the other poster said, apply to the State your school was in and then apply for a FL license.
From there you can register to take the NCLEX in any State in the Nation , I also believe as well as some US territories such as Puerto Rico. I have a friend that was educated in one State (CT), sent her nursing application to another State (NC I believe it was, b/c she was moving there) and tested in a totally different State (MA) because where she was living during college was as much closer to a MA pearsonvue testing site than any of the CT ones.
I also have several friends who were educated and tested in one state but they had their license issued from a different state. They did what I stated above, the sent their nursing license application to the State they wanted to be licensed in, but took the test in the state they went to school in
Its not uncommon for people to be educated in one state to then register for licensing in another. Many people go to school out of the STate they normally live in.
