NC Hospitals

I work in L and D at Wakemed Raleigh, and love it! I don't think they hire new grads right out of school, though. Maybe you could do mother/baby for a year and then transfer? Good luck!

I'm a nursing student (graduate May 2008) and am currently doing my Peds clinicals at both Baptist and Forsyth hospitals. Both NICUs are very nice and the nurses are extremely nice to students. I can't say this for all the areas I'm done clinicals in either. I've also met some of the Nurse Practitioners at both facilities and they were extremely nice as well.

Baptist currently has a list of NICU positions open and I believe they might hire new grads because they have so many openings. I was told by an instructor that some of the NICU nurses have left Baptist for Forsyth d/t better working conditions and over time pay. This is only heresay however so take it for whatever it is worth. Forsyth only cares for babies that are born at that hospital where Baptist accepts children from many outlying hospitals. They also have a critical care transport hospital. Baptist will care for children on a more long-term basis than Forsyth also. Since Baptist is a teaching hospital and children come from many outlying areas, you might find a wider variety of conditions there than at Forsyth.

If I was interested in working in a NICU I'd feel comfortable with either of these hospitals. I was very impressed and will have to see what I learn if I get to interview with the nurse manager. Where are you in school - Winston Salem state? That's wonderful- clinicals at both locations! Have you thought about where you might apply to work? I'm in school in NYC and I think I'm the only one applying already, but to work in NC, you've got to start this early. Best of luck!

I'm attending Surry Community College in Dobson, NC. It's about 40 minutes from Winston-Salem. We do clinicals in both Winston hospitals as wells as Mount Airy and Elkin (much smaller hospitals). I had originally thought I'd work at Forsyth because I wanted to do L and D or post-partum but now I'm leaning towards starting out in Peds and that will be at Baptist. Baptist has the children's hospital and Forsyth does obstetrics. I delivered both my children at Forsyth and am very impressed with them as well.

For future reference, there is a smaller hospital being constructed in Kernersville (a fairly small town very close to W-S) and plans are in the works to build hospitals in either Davie county or Clemmons (both near W-S as well). Both Forsyth and Baptist want to build new, smaller facilities to service outlying area so there is a bid war going on right now between the two facilities. The new hospital won't open til approx 2013 but that might be something we'd would want to consider later on once we have some experience if we wanted to move into management.

PS Please let me know how your interviews go. I haven't spoken to anyone yet and I'm curious what each hospital is offering new grads. We'll be meeting with recruiters next semester so I'll be happy to pass on any information I obtain as well.

I don't have much relevant information, but I plan on applying for a new grad position in a peds ICU at Wake Med when I graduate. I have heard wonderful things about how Wake Med treats their employees, and their turnover rate is pretty low. As it gets closer to my graduation (12/08) I will probably look into other area hospitals, but I pretty much have my sights set on Wake Med. Good Luck to you!
