Narcan Prep

Hey guys, just a quick question... nursing student here.

I have a little quiz my clinical instructor gives every week, and one question has me stumped...

"What are the steps to prepare and give Narcan?"

Um... am I over thinking this? This particular question pertains to my post op that needed 0.1 mg though her IV for resp depression.

Stop offending narc, Check vitals, level of consciousness, know orders

Can give undiluted or in SW, over 15 seconds, titrate to pt response, can give more in 2-3 min if necessary.

Do I have to flush IV first? Or just pinch line, push, open line again?

I must be missing something.

Thanks

I wonder if they might want details as to how you are preparing the actual medication. You touched on it, by mentioning two ways it may be given, but perhaps you could expand on that.

That is, if you are going to dilute it, specify how you would do this.

I also prepare for them to vomit.. As this has happened to me many times.. (this is with more for an addict than post op but I'd still be prepared)

What have you learned from researching the drug?

If this is for a post-operative patient, there is something you need to assess for. I'm not going to tell you what it is, but check out Clinicians ultimate guide to drug therapy.

(Since this question was posted 8 July, I doubt the OP is going to come back. Her quiz has probably been graded long already.)

This is what came to my mind too. I have only ever given it once and still remember that the pt vomited almost immediately after it was given.
