Multiple Offers in Houston/ Relocating

Published

Hello,

I am interviewing at different hospitals (all for endoscopy 💩)in Houston and have been offered positions at two hospitals: MD Anderson and St Joseph Med Center. I have further interviews at two others: Houston Methodist and Memorial Hermann. A recruiter from HCA also just called me. I need input on which hospitals are great to work for, specifically endoscopy but also more general like pay, benefits, overall nursing culture. I'm having a hard time making a decision as I think commuting to the med center will be hard, but they seem like great hospitals.

Thanks!

Where are you relocating from? Are all of the positions in the Med Center? Where you live and the commute may be a factor to consider. I have heard mixed things about HCA facilities in other cities.

Will be living in close proximity to spring, that's where my parents are. I have two interviews coming up in the woodlands and humble. Trying to get an interview at Houston Methodist willowbrook since that would be the closest. Since I already have two offers, I feel that I need to accept one of them in case I don't get any other offers. I'm a little nervous about the commute. Right now I commute to Manhattan every day, but I feel that the traffic might be worse in Houston... Is MD Anderson a good hospital to work for?

I have several friends that work at MD Anderson and they love it. Facility is staffed very well, pay is good, usually get an annual bonus of a few thousand, great tuition reimbursement and great benefits (it is a state funded hospital).

Only problem is the commute. For me it would add 2 hours to my day with driving and then the crazy parking in the med center. They have a few outlying clinics and such, but those are harder to get into.

Hi,

what is the tuition reimbursement like at MD Anderson? I know at Memorial Hermann it is $5k a year and $4K at Houston Methodist....

Thank you for the response. Where are you commuting from that it would be 2 hours? With traffic in rush hour could it be two hours from Spring? That's not a good quality of life, even for good benefits...

They didn't include anything on tuition reimbursement on the information they sent me. I'm not planning on going back to school anytime soon, so for me it's not that important. If I find out that information I will let you know.

Does anyone think that pay may be negotiable? I am coming from NYC which has higher salaries due to cost of living but I am taking a 35,000 pay cut... seems excessive

2 hours a day, not each way.

Spring to med center is probably an hour or so depending on the time.

You will be able to probably negotiate some (like maybe an extra dollar an hour or so), but not $35,000.

Yes, you will not make as much as you did in NYC. I took a $5/hr pay cut (worked in NYC) but remember there is no state or city tax in Houston so that softens the blow. How long have you been a nurse?

Methodist is the best place to work in Houston. MD Anderson has the best pay. Memorial Hermann just laid off 300 people.

Specializes in Burn ICU.

I PMed you with info and the enrollments guide for Hermann :)

Hermann laid off 350 non clinical employees. MD Anderson did the same thing and had a hiring freeze for RNs recently. Methodist, I don't know much about regarding their retention but they are a great company except really cater to customer service (not a bad thing, but I left customer service to be a nurse). Each has their pros and cons.
