I know of four hospitals in the city of Syracuse. SUNY Health Science Center (Locally known as Upstate Medical Center) is a teaching hospital, unionized, a state job, and has education opportunities up to (I believe) PhD in nursing; St Joseph's Hospital is locally reknown for it's cardiac care and has what I consider the kindest ER nurses in the city; the other two I know nothing about, Crouse-Irving Hospital and Community General Hospital.
If you're up for psychiatric nursing, there is Hutching's Psychiatric Center. There are also some smaller hospitals in the surrounding cities depending on how long of a commute to work you want and how close to the actual city of Syracuse you will be living. There is Oneida Healthcare Center with both Hospital and LTC in the same building in Oneida; The city of Rome has Rome Memorial Hospital which also houses an LTC facility; Fulton has Lee Memorial Hospital; Cortland has Cortland Memorial Hospital; Utica has three, St Luke's which has a lockdown psychiatric unit, radiology school, and a neighboring LTC; St Elizabeth's which has a psychiatric unit, nursing school, radiology school, and is a trauma center; and Faxton which is affiliated with St Luke's and has an urgent care but I don't know much else about that one.
Those are all the ones within an hour or less from the city of Syracuse. As far as pay goes I have no idea. I do know that Oneida Healthcare pays about $18 an hour for day shift RN's to start, has 12 hour shifts, RN's are unionized through NYSNA and has good medical benefits. Their LTC (where I work) pays CNA's about $10 per hours to start, LPN's $13, and RN's $18, non-union across the board, and just opened a physical rehabilitation section.
I hope that helps.

I'm also thinking of moving to syracuse. I am a canadian RN who recently got married to a US citizen. I've been trying to find out how much an RN with a degree makes an hour but not much info. Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Depending on where in the Syracuse area you want to land, there is alot to pick from. The big city Hospitals in Syracuse are University Hospital, ST.Jospephs, Communitiy General and Crouse. One of the other replys mentioned these. I live in Oswego,NY. We are 45 min. from Syracuse, and right on Lake Ontario. My Husband and I are both RN's. He works for Oswego Health, and I work for Sunrise RHC and Rehab Center. We love it here, and wouldn't live anywhere else. The RN salary range for an experenced RN starts somewhere around $20/hr and up, but that of course depends and experience and where you are working. There are also several other LTC facilities in this area that are always looking for RN's , as are we. Just as a side note, my son is married to a Canadian citizen from New Finland. Best of luck to you and your new hubby:yeah:Let me know if we can help you.
Thank you for your response, the info is much appreciated. I'm a bit concerned though, because through a friend of my husband's who works for an insurance company in syracuse we were told RNs make about 30/hr (she asked a nurse who works at the insurance company). However, I'm wondering how correct the information is, I mean if in your city it's around 20/hr. I currently make 30/hr in Toronto, Ontario. I was hoping to make at least the same in Syracuse, or maybe a dollar or two less. I've been nursing for three years and the pay seems to go up fast here in toronto but the expenses are high, which is why I've decided to move to syracuse. I've been looking for someone who works in Upstate medical university since that's where I want to work but no luck so far. Anyways, any extra info from anyone that reads this would be very helpful.

Although I live in MA i was born and brought up in the Syracuse suburbs. Before you worry that the pay is low look at the cost of living. I know real estate there is much cheaper than many areas of the Northeast.
Cost of living isnt bad either. There are many nice suburbs to live in as well. Syracuse is becoming quite a dynamic city as well. There are a couple of colleges besides Syracuse University as well. Good luck.. its a nice place!!

Well, we moved to a small town in upstate NY from NYC, and, while housing is much lower and there are no tolls, a loaf of bread is a loaf of bread, and other than housing nothing is cheaper. In fact, some things are higher because we are remote and transportation factors into costs.
I don't know what Syracuse pays.
But good luck, and congratulations on your new career!
Thanks for all kind informaiton on the RN opportunities in Syracuse.
VeryberryRN, any hospitals you can recommend in Oswego or Fulton? What are the demand to nurses there? What about the job opportunities for new grads? As you can see from my post, I will be new graduate without any previous experience. thanks!

Hi! I work at Community General Hospital in Syracuse, NY. I have also worked at St. Joseph's Hospital many, many years ago. I can tell you that the starting salary for a new RN at Community is about $22/hr base pay. I don't have the actual scale in front of me, but I believe it's around 21 or 22. We also pay up to 10 years experience I believe, so someone coming in with 10 years experience would be making close to $30/hr. I currently make about 31/hr base pay. I do work only night shift, so I recieve a $3 differential during the week and $5 differential during the weekend. I do believe (I heard thru the grapevine) that Community is one of the top paying hospitals in the area. Another hospital to consider that hasn't been mentioned is the VA. That is the one with probably the best benefits.

I am also thinking of moving to Syracuse early next spring. I am an RN with 15 years experience. I would love to live downtown and would appreciate any info on areas that are safe and areas to avoid. Currently living in downtown Raleigh NC in historic district, so I am not 'afraid' of the normal issues that all vibrant downtown areas deal with. Of course I want it to be safe, close to hospital (looking at St. Joe's), able to walk to restaurants, coffee shops, nightlife, etc. I know that the university is in town so it goes without saying that I would prefer not to live near 'frat row'. I have been doing some research and Syracuse looks like a very up and coming city with a lot of great art/culture, music, etc. going on.
Any info appreciated..respond here or PM
