moving to the states

Published

I am interested in moving to the states from Scotland. I was advised to try this site for help. It is an excellent site and so large.

Does anyone know of any recruiting agencies that specialize in nurse recruiting from abroad. I have gathered that this may take some time as visas are at present limited. Note where I am from, I can assure you guys a state with bad weather is no problem to me or my family.

All help gratefully received

Hi Edward and welcome to the site

There is plenty of information both here in the UK forum and the International forum. I suggest reading the sticky in the International forum called Primer to working in the USA You are looking at a few years before you make the move and that is if you are lucky to get a visa, now no longer a guarantee due to the high demand. You do not need an agency to make the move, there are a few of us making the move without using an agency. Best I can advise is decide on where you would like to live, apply to the board of nursing (BON) for foreign trained nurse and meet their requirements. You may need to get CES done with CGFNS and if this is the case suggest you get the full course. We do not recommend California as initial licensure and there is a sticky in the International forum explaining why. Once you have met licensure requirements you will be given permission to sit NCLEX and we have a great NCLEX forum in the student section with good support and study guides. Once passed NCLEX you can approach hospitals in the area you would like to live and see if they are interested in petitioning you. They will then start the process. I would also suggest you read up on retrogression and immigration issues and again a few threads in the International forum regarding this.

If you are interested a few UK nurse meet up every Tuesday night from 8pm to 10ish for a chin wag in the chat room but to get in you need to meet criteria which is memer more than 2 days and 15 posts or upgrade membership. Hope to see you in ther on night

Good luck and have a good read :)

:welcome:HI ted, I too am from scotland now living in upstate ny... ive yet to brace myself for the winter ahead... from what i have seen and heard, much worse winters than we are used to back home.. its not all sun, sun, sun, you know... but welcome anyway, like you i,m a newbie and an unemployed rgn awaiting my licence..:o

You had better read all the "stickies" & primers & threads on here! AS has already been alluded to it's not so easy now & won't be unless US immigration sees a change in the current law.

If you're loking for a quicker move you'll have to seek out another country because at the moment a move to the USA appears to be years away!

I 2nd the fact that you don't need an agency though - if you can, steer clear & go it alone. there's plenty of help on here for those that want to do that. If you must use an agency find one that does direct hire contracts so that you can at least know where you're going! There are a few but be warned many of them have huge fees for breaking your contract so do your homework!

Good luck - it's a very long haul - I've taken up a job in Canada, as I'm fed up with not knowing how long it'll be! I've not stopped my USA paperwork from it's slow progress but I can't stand living in limbo anymore!
