Moving out of state..?

Published

I'm finishing up my last year of nursing school in my BSN program in New York state. I know for a fact that I would like to move and work in Washington state. Would it be beneficial to sit for WA NCLEX instead of taking the NY NCLEX, transferring paperwork to the DOH, paying fees, and potentially taking another exam?

Absolutely, if you know for a fact that you are not going to work in NY, there is no reason to apply for licensure there and then to apply for licensure by endorsement in WA.

NCLEX is a national test. There is no such thing as a WA NCLEX and a NY NCLEX. If you intend to move to WA after graduation, then apply for a "License by Exam" on the WA BON website. Even if you decide to get your license in NY first and then move to WA, you do not need to take the exam again. You would apply for license in WA by "License by Endorsement".

When finishing school in the northeast everyone was advised to get licensed in the state our school was in because it was faster. It was stressed to us that the sooner we took the NCLEX the better as it has been proven that after a certain number of weeks (can't remember the amount) the pass rate significantly drops. You might want to see if you can find out how long it would take to get licensed in WA vs NY (I know CA can be notoriously long, but no clue about other states).
