Moving to Largo, Florida

I will be moving to Largo, FL soon. I am a native of FL and miss living there. Does anyone have any opinions of the healthcare system there? Does anyone know what the going wages are? Any suggestions for area to live? Thanks for your help!

Largo is very nice, but congested with lots of traffic. The price of housing has skyrocketd the last three years. They do have nice apartments.

Stay away from Largo Medical. I've heard bad things about the ratios and work there.

:yeahthat:

That's also what I heard. There are Magnet and Top 100 hospitals right in that area; I'd check them out first.

I also think you can apply online....

Thank you for the help. I don't know if an apartment will work. My husband and I have three kids. I think housing is flying up everywhere!! Do they have large apartments down there?

When I lived there I lived in a very nice one bedroom in a large complex off of Ulmerton Road. No kids allowed. I'm not sure what kind of family apartments there are there.

I'm sure there are plenty of houses for rent and/or for sale though. Just be prepared for sticker shock.

BTW, I'm not sure about the wages. I'm making $29.00 with 13 years at the same hospital. I think new grads are making about $22.00/$24.00 but I'm not sure.

Thanks, Tweety! I have already had some sticker shock! I have been looking online. I will probably end at the farthest point from the beach!! But, oh well.

I'd check out The St. Pete Times Sunday Classifieds for more local and up-to-date information. Here's the link. Best wishes.

The housing costs are amazing. Even my house that we bought for 150,000 just five years ago has a market value of $240,000. I'd take the money and run, but can't afford a comparable house in a nice neighborhood.

Good luck to you! (The beach is overrated anyway. LOL)

Tweets -- Recenly read the St. Pete's beaches are top-notch!

It is quite congested anywhere in Pinellas County. Move a little up north to Pasco County where housing is a little bit less expensive than Pinellas. If you really want to work in Pinellas (they have better hospitals than Pasco), the drive isn't too bad if you live in South Pasco.

They have Magnet Hospitals in Pinellas. Excellent ones. Try the Morton Plant Mease hospitals... Morton Plant in Clearwater, Mease Countryside in Safety Harbor, Mease Dunedin in Dunedin, Morton Plant North Bay in New Port Richey (which is actually in Pasco County). They have very good benefits. Used to work at one of their hospitals but LPN pay was not very attractive but very good learning experience. I switched to LTC for better pay. RN's fresh out of school start at $19/hr. Can't remember how much shift diff was but it was $1.15/hr for LPN for 3-11. Shift diff is higher for RN's. If I'm not mistaken, it's arond $5/hr for 11-7. Mease Countryside has been expanding with a new maternity unit but you may also want to try Morton Plant in Clearwater, it's the largest of the four hospitals. Be careful during the summer though when census gets low... they tend to cancel a lot and unless you have enough PTO to cover for it, you won't get a full two weeks' worth of pay :(

Hope this little bit of info helps! :)

i wouldn't live in LARGHETTO. in fact, when my kids are dirty from playing outside, i tell them they look like they are from largo!

i love love love largo med! it's a great hospital! i used to work there in ICU and then i did agency all over, med/surg and icu. oh it's fantastic, honestly

Maybe in ICU it's fantastic, but I've heard dreadful things about med-surg, and tele.

You remind of locals in Clearwater, very prejudiced againt locals in Largo. Well at least it's better than Penniless, I mean Pinellas Park. (wink)

As with any area, there are some nice area's in Largo. I believe that Largo Med is one of the worst hospitals I have every been to. When I had my daughter there, they left me to sleep in blood soiled sheets after I had my daughter and didnt bother to clean the blood all over the toilet and bathroom floor. Not small spots either, alot. I had her at 0800 and I had to ask them to change my sheets 24 hours later. The nurse should have noticed it. My dying mother was there for pneumonia and her room was so dirty. She caught an infection in her stool but wouldn't tell the family what it was. Only to wash our hands. (my guess c-dif or merca) I wasn't a nurse then but if I was....... Maybe things have gotten better since or maybe I just had bad luck 2 times. It's been 6 years.
