Memorization in microbiology

Published

How much memorization is needed for microbiology. Is it hard? What should I be trying to memorize?

Micro was totally conceptual for me. I am a master of memorization and it DID NOT help me in micro!

There is some. You have to memorize your procedures like staining and what it relates to. Keep good notes and you will do fine.

For me, SOME things you can memorize but for the mst part you must learn and retain the information-- everything builds on top of one another. Just keep up and study everything you learned the night after lecture (review notes/flashcards). I also pre-read every chapter before lecture as a way to reiterate and retain the information :)

Thank you! But what about lab? Is it mostly techniques that you need to memorize or learn. Is it mostly motor memory? Or do you have to memorize bacteria names and stuff?

Maybe it was just my instructor but I had to do a lot of memorization in micro - names of organisms, classifications, where they were found, what effects they have on the body, etc. A lot of his exam questions were based around identifying an organism when given certain symptoms, grouping lists of organisms based on a given classification, stuff like that. Lab was more about keeping a pristine lab notebook and being able to explain why certain tests and procedures would be most appropriate in a given situation. Good luck!
