medication protocols

This is controlled by state law and the nurse practice act in your state. I would contact your State school nurse organization http://www.nasn.org/community/affiliates.htm or your state Board of Nursing. http://www.ncsbn.org/

In the 4 states I have been a school nurse in, you need a doctors order to give OTCs, just as you would in a hospital. We as licensed professionals need an order from an MD or NP to administer OTC, we cannot take orders for medication from parents. And they must send in the meds in the original bottle. It applies to staff members also - cannot administer OTC meds to them.

Does anyone have a protocol for giving OTC meds

at school? We currently have to call a parent before

giving Tylenol, Tums, etc. How do others do this?

Also, do you call for EVERYTHING>>>>>calamine,

hct cream, orajel, cough drops......I know that in

theory we are supposed to, but do you have a

parent give an ok in advance or do you call each time?

"20 questions".....have you eaten today....are you pregnant....

When I worked as a substitute school nurse and what I can recall as a parent from when my younger children were in school,Parents signed a release at the beginning of the school year for Tylenol to be given;this was optional.

This form is probably available in your local school district.Parents may have specified on the health form they filled out at the beginning of the school year

whether you could give the other items without calling. Cough drops were pretty routine at a camp infirmary and I think also in schools where I worked.

We do not give any meds without both an MD and a parent signature. I do give cough drops and otc creams like eucerin, desitin, vaseline, etc without. If i so not have permission slips signed i call parent the first time and then resend the permission slip home, usually get it completed after i have to call!

i used to work in e.d. and this is my first time to work in school. as of now, i have no guidelines or format that i can follow. i'm making health records for the entire sch. (prep, elem. high-school and college) can you also share some format for this?

i would really appreciate if you could help me.

Mary. I do keep a folder for each student , according to program, with all signed permissions as well as a nurses note , in which i document all interactions..you never know when that will come in handy! Marry

We have standing orders from a local doc. If you still do not have anything, get me your mailing address and I can send you a copy of ours. We still have permission forms from parents and we notify them of anything we deem pertinent, but having a doctor's protocol sure helps.
