Med test policy?

What is your school's policy regarding the medication administration test?

Every semester we take a med test on the first clinical day. If you don't get a 100%, you take it again the next week. If you fail the second time, you have to go to remediation and you have a final chance to get a 100%. If you mess up your third test, you're forced to withdraw.

A classmate failed her third chance, and it's too late to get any money back if she withdrew. Shouldn't she be able to withdraw and "audit" the class? It doesn't seem fair that she paid for the class, yet isn't allowed to at least continue to sit in on the lectures. I understand that it could be a liability to let her on the clinical floor. Does it work like this at your school too?

    Yeah pretty much. Only we have a math test prior to the start of each semester. Everyone knows going in that there will be a math test, and you have 3 chances to pass the exam. If you don't pass after 3 attempts you are done and can't continue.

    So if it's before the semester starts, and you fail, you can drop the course for a refund? The problem with how they do it at my school is by the time you're on the 3rd attempt, it's past the point where you can get any money back.

    If someone is taking up a seat, I don't know if they should get a refund since it's their fault they're getting kicked out, but if they want to continue to attend the lectures for the knowledge/experience, they should be able to. After all, they paid for it, right? Our school lets you repeat one course, one time. So being able to audit the class would be a benefit if you're planning on repeating it the next term. It just doesn't seem right to me that they can force you to withdrawal, without a refund or the option of an audit.

    The first attempt is usually the first week of the semester. The second attempt is the week 2. The third attempt is week 3. The drop date where you can get a partial refund is the end of the third week so you get something like 50% of your tuition back if you drop out. For permanent records purposes nothing goes on your record if you drop before the end of the 3rd week. The nursing department counts it as a withdrawal though. You are allowed only 1 withdrawal or failure and can be readmitted only once. If you withdraw or fail twice you are out. Say you fail first semester and get back in and then make it all the way to the last semester and fail that semester. You are done and can't be readmitted back into the program.

    At my school we have the med cal test twice. The first one you have to pass with 90% and the second 95%. There can be three attempts, then you are kicked out of the program if you don't pass. So I guess my school is a bit more relaxed.

    During our 2nd semester we had 5 math tests. You had to pass 3 out of the 5 with a 100%. If you failed to do so then you were dropped out of the semester but could re-apply for the next semester. 9 out of 10 students that failed were re-admitted for the next semester.

    P.S. I was one of them. It was too late to drop, lost all my money for that semester. BUT it made me a better nurse and I sailed through the next semester with ease and passed all math tests with 100%.
