OK, I have to write a two page essay:bluecry1: to send along with my nursing application. It has to be my opinion about a healthcare or social issue. I'm trying to think of topics:confused:, but I want it to refreshing. I do not want to write about a topic that the college has read thousands of times.:zzzzz So, that's were ya'll come in:D. (I'm a Georgian girl:yeah:) Your opinions will help start the wheels turning in my head. And I do not want to talk about anything political because thats just a negative thing to talk about period. :argue:

Thanks a bunch:D

How about Autism?

I would pick an issue that has personally affected you. If anyone should ask why you chose to write about what you did, you could say it is something that has touched your life..... Good luck.

That's funny, I was going to add how I thought about writing about Autism in my thread, but I was trying to make it short. Yeah, I was thinkning about Autism because I know people who are doing research about the tie between vaccines and Autism.

Thanks a bunch :D

Nothing has personally affected me, so that's why I was trying to get ideas. And I don't know anyone that has had an healthcare issue.

Whatever topic you choose, I would suggest that you write a research-based paper, citing credible sources such as nursing, education or allied health journals. (Your school or public librarian can help you.) Show the program selection committee that you understand the importance of evidence-based thinking in the field of nursing.

Good luck!

You could also write about the possible link between autism and early ultrasounds.....It is a fact that ultrasounds are much, much stronger than they were even 10 years ago.

I'd suggest work on access to health care, but that's just me. Then again, if you want to cite peer-reviewed literature on the lack of a link between vaccines and autism, more power to you.

The thing is there is a link to vaccines and autism. Even the government has come out to say that there was. I do not know if you have heard about a girl who was "normal" before she went to the dr.s office to get caught up on her vaccines. The doctor gave 9 vaccines all at once, and I don't know how much time there was between that and when she started acting different I'm rusty on this story. But the family was on Larry King Live and they annouced that there was a link between the two, especially, if a person carries a particular gene. Now, the girl has autism. They are saying that because of the mercury in the vaccines is what caused the autism. But that was done before the made mercury free vaccines. Supposedly, there are thousands of case on this issue.

Another option may be to write about something happening within your community.

Wow, really I haven't heard of that. I'll definetly look in to that. Ultrasounds to me I always that they were like x-rays, not safe. But doctors tell you differently.

Thanks:D

First, that is an anecdote. Most autism sites can only supply anecdotes, and the plural of anecdotes is not data.

Second, the government hasn't "admitted" anything. I presume you're referring to the Hannah Polling case, where the girl had a preexisting mitochondrial disorder that was exacerbated by the vaccines and then caused autism-like symptoms. Such disorders are known to be genetic in order and very rare. Her case was separated from the Autism Omnibus proceedings, presumably because her problems stemmed from something other than Autism. The other tests cases have not fared well at all, with the government demolishing the plaintiff's cases.

I heard about the Polling case from Orac on Respectful Insolence. Even if you disagree, you should read through his archives on the subject: http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/medicine/autism/

There's lots of good stuff in there, on how there is not "epidemic", merely a switch in diagnostic terminology, on various studies showing that thimerosol has no link to autism, and the effects that anti-vaccine scares have on public health and the health of unvaccinated children when sufficiently large numbers of kids in a given area are unvaccinated.
