Martha Rogers

Please help me to better understand the Martha Rogers theory. Any papers you can send me would help. My main obsatcle is figuring out how her theory applies to bedside nursing in practice. Thanks.

Martha Rogers theory surrounded what she referred to as the "Unitary Human Being." I do not know much about it as I have always felt that the woman was a flake, and put nursing theory 'beyond' the grasp of bed-side nurses. Obviously, for nurses to embrace and use a theory [and recognize that they are doing so], it should be easily understandable.

If you click on the following link: http://archive.uwcm.ac.uk/uwcm/ns/martha/Theory.htm

It will take you to a very informative web-site about Martha Roger's theory.

Good luck with your paper.

No clue where this woman is coming from! But in one of our nursing texts ("Fundamentals of Nursing," Kozier, Erb, Blais, and Wilkinson. Addison Wesley Longman, Inc. 1998) the following example is given re Rogers: "Nurses' use of therapeutic touch is based on the concept of human energy fields. The human energy field is identified by a pattern. The qualities of a field vary from person to person and are affected by pain and illness. Although the field is infinite, realistically it is most clearly "felt" within several feet of the body. The trained nurse can assess and feel the energy field and manipulate it to help a person manage pain."

I'd hate to try to write a paper on that--Good luck!

Look in "Nursing Theorists and Their Work"by Ann Marriner-Tomey for a great overview of all energy field theorists including Rogers. Also do a literature search for anything by Richard Cowling, RN, PhD, who is a Rogerian Scholar. You might want to read my article entitled Energy Collaboration: A Personal Journey for a glimpse at just how powerful energy is. My website address is above. Click on the articles section and read. If you can't find the site..email me directly. If you find the site..sign the guestbook. thanx

Good Luck

Chas
