Hi everyone! This may be an odd question but I can't find information anywhere. I am currently pursuing a BSN, and today I received a written warning for possession of marijuana. Yes I plan on quitting, yes I am aware it is illegal especially for nurses. My question is am I going to be able to obtain a nursing license? I have found sources that say charges and citations will most likely result in a no, but I specifically got a written warning, no charge. The cop cut me a major break and said this shouldn't impact my future as a nurse. Any advice? I am also just finishing up my generals so it will be a few years before I sit for boards. Thank you!

Does not matter what the cop said. Only your BON can answer this question.

You weren't charged with anything, so I don't really understand how it could have a negative impact on your career.

I don't think written warnings pop up on any sort of background check. If you get a license and pop positive for THC on a pre-employment drug screen and your employer reports you to the BoN, well that's a different issue altogether.

Curious as to how you managed to get the cop to cut you a break.
I mean, I've been pulled over for speeding before and got a break
because I was wearing scrubs and badge and obviously on my way
to work at the hospital... but that's speeding. Cops really will cut
you a break if you have marijuana on you?
Anyway, like others have said, you weren't charged with anything so
you likely don't have anything to worry about. Just quit, like you
said you are going to. Please!

In my state the board donesn't really care about things like MIPs or historic marajuana tickets, especially if there isn't a pattern of abuse and you weren't in a position of trust/responsibility (smoking a joint at a concert vs getting caught smoking during your lunch while at work as a teacher). They would be more concerned that you still use marijuana, especially after getting a warning for using it. You will also have to find a school that will take you, which may be far more difficult than getting licensure from the board.
