Making the grade

Published

First off I'm new to the forums, my name is Brianna, I'm a 25 year old mother to 2 young boys, Jordan 2 1/2 and Jared 11 months. I'm going to back to school and I have been considering what I want to do. I have nearly a year of college courses comleted, but mostly computer classes :( I do like computers, but I need a job that not only pays well, but that there is a HIGH demand for, is secure, and I enjoy helping people, I'm empathetic, social and friendly, sitting behind a computer all day probably isn't the best job considering my personality! Well, I'm about 75% sure that I want to go to nursing school and become a RN. I do have a few concerns though, one is getting entry into the program, they are selective, meaning I need to have a 3.5+ GPA.. ouch. With 2 young kids that won't be easy. My cumulative GPA before ended up being 3.33, so I have some catching up to do! I'm a little daunted by the looming task before me, but I'm excited all the same. I suppose one fear of mine is that I DON'T make the 3.5 GPA, and I'm not admitted into the program.. failure. Not an option for me, but can I do it with 2 young boys demanding my time and attention? I'm not sure, but I really want to try! I'm hoping to find people of like heart here, maybe a little encouragement, I don't know lol

Well hello everyone :D nice to meet you all :)

PS- for comparison how selective are the nursing programs you are/will be attending?

I guess I see a "hard to get into" nursing program better than one with no wait....for one reason. It weeds out the ones who arent ready to put in the time...

I too have 2 children, though mine are girls, and 8 & 9 years old. I am only taking a/p I and psych this semester for 7 credits, but will be moving up to 12 credits next sememster and 14 for the summer.

With all those computer classes you should also look at the health information management programs at the JCs in the area where you live. Computers have invaded the healthcare system in a big way. You still have to take Anatomy and Physiology, Medical Terminology and a class in Diseases. No chemistry or micro though.

It can be done if you really want it and prioritize it. I would think you'd have to be more than 75% sure you want to be a nurse before making the sacrifice it's going to take.

Good luck. Quite a bit of mothers go back to school and do well, and you can too!

I agree with Tweety. I'd think you would need to be 95% sure. (There's always that lack of uncertainty about if you will like it, can you handle it, etc, therefore I put 95%) lol

It can be done. Think about pros and cons, and them make your decision. See if you can shadow a nurse at a local hospital. I've never done it myself, but have read threads about it.

Good luck and welcome to Allnurses.com! :)
